Hmmmm, a P-39 , defending Pearl Harbor from the Japanese? Hmmmm, and we wonder why school kids are confused today! Need to put her in Russian markings, that would REALLY confuse them!

Mike, Ray, thanks -- and keep those reports coming y' hear?

Why's it called a '310 Kate'?

Re: The Cobra Den

Because that is it's tail number. Don't want to confuse it with the other Tora Kate. Don't recall it's tail number at the moment.

That's what I thought, thanks.

On the other hand, it coulda been one of those Kates that was built from a Cessna twin, instead of the BT-13/T-6 heap......

Chris is right, it's that Kate's tail number. We sometimes have two Kate replicas in the Cobra Den, so we refer to them as Kate 310 and Kate 356. When one of the Tora birds is going cross country, they usually use a Tora call sign with Center, such as Tora 310 (which would be Kate 310), just in case any of you hear that call sign when flying around!

Here's what's happening in the Cobra Den:

The P-63 is coming together! The engine is at Yancy's, being redone. Read all about it on the CAF CenTex Wing P-39 and P-63F News thread. http://warbirdinformationexchange.org/p ... =3&t=31659
It sounds like it's amazing that the engine lasted as long as it did!

The SNJ-4 "Ol' Yeller" is almost back in the air. All that is left now is some radio work.

The T-6 "Triple Nickle" has work continuing on it. Anyone know where we can somehow get a jig for the left wing, or drawings for one?

The U-11A is finally almost finished with it's annual. It's ready for the sign-off. Nothing was terribly wrong with it, just a lack of time on my part to get it done.

The Kate and Zero are up and going.

The P-39 is flying, with the drop tank removed once again.

The B-25 "Yellow Rose" is having some minor maintenance done during this slow part of the year.

The T-34A is still for sale.

The CJ-6A is undergoing some minor maintenance and cosmetics.

The U-3A is up and flying.

Calvin Allen's T-6 is almost finished with it's annual.

The CAP marked 172 is in annual, and looking for a nose gear.

The much awaited Cobra Den T-shirts are still a few weeks away. Everything is decided upon now, but there is about a 4-5 week turnaround do to the shop having a lot of business right now (ROT Rally, air shows, car shows, etc.)

Come by and see us!

We now have a virtual tour of the Cobra Den's museum! Also one of the Yellow Rose flight deck! Go to www.centexwing.com and on the left of the homepage, under "More" at the bottom of the list, you will see "virtual tour". Click on it and you will find the cockpit 360 tour, as well as tours of the Central Texas Wing museum.

is that a peroid ww2 hanger? It sure looks like it and it adds a great feel around those planes.

Yes, the Cobra Den (Central Texas Wing, CAF) hangar is the only remaining WWII hangar on the airport. It was the base "Shop Hangar", where all the major maintenance work was done. Up the ramp were three smaller wooden hangars, but they were not maintained and fell down or had to be taken down.

In fact, with the removal of the two other remaining buildings behind the old tower location (when looking through the remains, my friend found an electrical box that had "Link Trainer Bld" stenciled on the back!), our hangar is the only remaining WWII structure on the airport property. There are a very few others which remain on the Gary Job Corps property.

that's fantastic that you were able to get that hanger. In Stratford, CT our musuem is doing everything we can to keep the original F4U-corsair maintanance hanger and use that for public functions etc. Luckly, everything from the Chance-Vought factory is still there. Like time stood still. Hopefully, we'll be as lucky as you guys and have a ww2 hanger to restore and have.
