of course we get the same thing at Reno every year. "those airplanes are too loud" hummm.....when you built your house on the hill you could SEE the airport...did you not think there would be occasional flying activity there?

Plum Island Airfield (2B2), in Newburyport, MA has a similar situation where the property owner at the end of the runway has put up obstacles to prevent the use of the runway. He owns the last 800 feet of the runway and will not let the airport use it anymore. Being an FBO operator at another airport you would think he would be concerned about putting the RV and an excavator on the runway, but he is being a real "Dick!"

There has been alot of discussion between the FAA, Mass Aero, and the owners, a law suit and a couple of close calls. But someone will have to be seriously injured or worse for it to change. Its just dumb!

He has an RV and an excavator on "his" last 800' of an active runway? Are you freaking kidding me?

I've heard a similar story about the airport here, that there was a guy with a crane broken in the erect position on a barge. He would tow it past the end of the runway in an attempt to extort the airport. Because of the obstruction penetrating the Part 77 surfaces the FAA wouldn't allow Cat 2 or 3 approaches.

Just got back from the fly-in at the Russell's today. The poles have been both cut down and a investigation is on the way probally followed by a lawsuit.

John Romain was piloting the 109, thank god he was not killed and the AC destroyed. I have images of the damage, which I will post in a hour or so.

This is something that should not have happened, the landower who put the poles up last year should be held accountable for the damage and be charged for endangering a pilot.

No idea how long it will take to repair but it will not be flying this weekend.

Seems like maybe the barge needs to strike and iceberg

I hope they can get in fixed in time, I doubt they will, but who knows...

If it can't make it to Thunder I'm sure the Hurricane will probably be coming in its place.

A German fighter flown by a British pilot in Canada brought down by an AAP. Crazy world we live in.

Wow, that could’ve been really bad. It looks like it just missed the slat on the wing. If jammed, I’m not sure how it would fly. That would not be fun with one slat down and one up.

Flap damage too,
I dont think I would be provoking any lawsuits with this guy.

The good news is, the damage isn't irreparable. They'll obviously need to de-skin the wing to fix it, though- hopefully the slat swing arm mechanisms aren't damaged. Plus, each wing on the 109 is individually detachable... if someone were to come up with an airworthy port wing for an E-4/7, for instance, the Russell Group could obtain it, bolt it on, and Bob's your auntie.

As to the a55h0le who put the poles up in the first place... I've met Ed Russell, a friend of mine and I had dinner with him a few years back. He's a nice guy, but DEFINITELY not someone you want to screw with- and that id10tic neighbor just unleashed all sorts of legal heII upon himself. We're talking weapons-grade st00pid here.

It would be a real pity if anything happened to that guy, y'know? A real shame...

Dave, thanks for the photo and update. And well done John Romain for getting the 109 back around the circuit and down in one piece!
