This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

SO why do women avoid wanting to volunteer at museums?
I tend to try to avoid gender based stereotypes, myself, but while we are in the sweeping generalisations -
most of the women I know have better things to do with their time.
'flyingheritage' - newsflash - Warbirds aren't actually very important. They are of great interest to us, but in the big scheme, trivial - to the majority of the population, of either gender.
Ryan, I respect your right to your views, I am just registering I utterly disagree.
The limitation of humanity of any group are prejudice, credulity, -isms and our own small compass of belief and understanding. Every day people transcend what is believed possible 'for them'.
They should be recognised as what we aspire to. I don't care who you are, it's the standard you live to that matters.
Rant over.

No surprises folks, and no, I'm not offended by disagreement.

Note that my post merely stated that what I believe to be underlying causes / reasons for their lack of enthusiasm. BTW, I have several female family members who are very supportive and have helped me with a LOT of warbirds stuff. I personally that women can be involved in a LOT of things (that you probably would think I'm against) given the right circumstances.

I must respectfully disagree. Warbirds are an important part of history, and even the U.S. military has time and funding to support the Heritage flights.

You are welcome; however the operation of ex-military aircraft isn't a primary or secondary industry; it is tertiary. It could be argued that commemoration (or propaganda) using 'warbirds' is of some importance, but it is not a core activity of
any military. The fact that the US military does not operate a heritage flight (unlike the RNZAF's Harvard, the RAF's BBMF and so forth) could be used to argue the other way; but it doesn't matter; it remains of peripheral interest to the majority of the population, and is not of 'show stopping' importance to the main aviation or any other industry.
We all like it, but it's the primary mistake to think what you like is of great importance. It isn't.
The big taboo in warbirds is it's 90% about boys getting to play with cool toys. It reads better if you push the 'commemoration' and 'museum' angle, gives you the tax breaks at least, but yeah, really. Does anyone really say; 'Let's all go and do some heritage?' Read: 'Let's go fly some fun 'planes, 'cos it's cool.'
"I love the smell of history in the morning." Yeah, right.

all the women in my family..... wife, daughter, mommy, sister, aunts, female friends could give a rat's hairy pooper about aviation history. they wouldn't even read my magazine articles at gun point!!!

Ha Ha. Same here. The wife who looks much like that picture of the lady fishing, says all airplanes look the same. In fact, she calls me a plane maniac. Anyone else?

My lovely bride went to a lot of airshows...at first. My enthusiasm has never really waned and hers has never really blossomed...to be polite about it..
I am an airplane nut. She is not but we still love each other...and get along most of the time
Here she is a few years ago before the glamor of old, stinky, greasy, hot airplanes wore off..

seriously, my mum dropped me off at Chino and Flabob regularly during the summer months of the 80's. She also spent countless hours "hanging out" at the Air Force Museum during the 70's while I obsessed over the WWII gallery.

sounds kinda like my life lol. my mom drops me off at chino every weekend I even made her stay to watch the TBM fly last week.

I do believe part of the issue does lie in what types of things interest each gender. Crossing over into a gender-specific area is not easy.
I can't speak for other gals, but it's a lot like taking a car to a repair shop. The guys there will ask the "man" the questions as to what's wrong with the car. IT'S MY CAR! I'm the one who drives it and I'm the one who knows how it's behaving. I have learned that I need to know 2-3 times more about any male-dominated subject than that of my male counterparts in order to be taken seriously whether it be about aircraft, cars, sports, etc.

I agree with you on your post Liza. But if your interest in aviation is strong, you don't let anything get in your way. Most of the assumptions were from people that really don't know me. But all in all, my whole aviation experience has made my life very interesting and fulfilling and I've made lifelong friends through it. But that's just me.....
To get more women interested, maybe some organizations and museums should have more activities aimed at women for exmple, like an all women restoration of an aircraft, but there are very few women that are trained in A & P. I think that's one of the reasons there are not alot of women getting their hands dirty on a warbird. Too few are trained or don't think they can do it (like me)

. I can't speak for all women, just from my experience. Just my 5 cents worth....

I have avoided this thread as the last one with a very similar question by (I believe) the same "author" produced problems and was locked and removed.
But after that caveat, there are several very accomplished females in aviation on this board alone as well as others. They are involved in flying, wrenching, airshows and museums. Look around.
If this is not the case downunder, who is to know why.
I will admit though that in the past very young girls were not encouraged to pursue these types of interests and activities and, in my case, it was actively discouraged by teachers and other possible adult mentors. Luckily for the most part that discouragement did not come from my parents. This type of discouragement at early ages definitely will affect your interest in that area in later years.

apparently you missunderstood me. I have no problem with women being in avaition. Just that this thread was of a baiting nature.

Actually I am pretty sure this same question has been asked before by wixlova/flyingheritage/etc that has been banned from WIX a dozen times. Crazy!
