What is the purpose of the vertical tapes along the fuselage?

The tape with spackle was how the Germans flushed and smoothed the gaps between the panels that were assembled by death camp forced labor working in mines and caves (and who weren't really into quality finishes) using in some cases, pretty crude tooling. There is a photo of a captured 262 flying over Ohio after the War in sort of bare metal with all the taped joints prominantly displayed.

The odd part is, that's exactly how LEAR gets such a smooth finish on their jets, BONDO (my bad, 'aerodynamic smoothner')and lots of it!
