I'm sure there's a way to make something like that work, but it's obviously something I wouldn't put on the mods to check up on.

I guess we'd need a code-monkey (and I use that term respectfully), to create the software/program to make it an automatic thing. The same thing could be used for when paid up members have their membership lapse. Maybe?

Or perhaps, instead of a given number of posts allowed before having to pay, they could be given a free month of posts, then after that have to pay for a membership in order to post. That would be an easier thing to control because then it would be date specific and not amount specific.

Good idea?

Logically, I think we have to assume that Martin is not a well man.

These things happen to the best of us.

I got a email from Martin about 6 weeks ago. He just added me has a friend on Facebook yesterday.
On the other hand Steve Doniack aka Mr. Warhawk aka Steve O. has just vanished completely. His P-40 webpage is unattended, he ran about 10 flikr photo groups but hasn't been to any in months. Same for here and the other boards he frequented   :?: :?:

I'll admit that I'm more of a lurker than an active poster now, for several reasons, primarily because since I'm not in the "warbird biz" anymore, I don't feel that I have a lot to offer or contribute anymore. I'm pretty far out of the loop! Some other reasons are that I haven't seen a lot of titles that have really "grabbed" me, but hey, that's just me; I am also pretty turned off by a lot of the drama, but I can just ignore it and not comment or get sucked in (well, most of the time).........again, that's completely subjective.

On the other hand, WIX is still a great place to pick up information, and is, at its root, still a tremendous warbird site!!!! While I understand that a forum is a very fluid environment, I really miss "the way it was" - that being said, I still do try to check in on a regular basis!!!

I may not be as active a poster as I once was (even though a lot of that was just BS & goofing around in Off-Topics), but I'd still want to be involved if the site were to become a subscription site...........

Sorry if this is a bit of a ramble!!!!

Didn't sound like a ramble to me, Beachy. It's interesting to hear the answer to your own question. I suspect many of the "originals" here have a similar mindset as you.

And that one "off topic" discussion y'all had was sure a doozie! Probably the second largest thread on WIX, right? :D

i think the quality is still here over all, but the pissing contests, know it all attitudes, prima donna syndromes, political issues, has more than taken it's toll. what peeves me is the teacher i know i know thing, along with arrogance. i've been a regular here since 2004 & i will not get into pissing contests with skunks. some skunks have gone, some are still here. i'm a gentleman, & while i've had a lifetime in aviation history & know plenty, i will never know it all. i learn here every time i log on, if others would take that attititude maybe some of the many crap storms wouldn't ensue!! by & large i've made many great friends here, i'm only sorry i've been able to shake so few of their hands.

All of what Tom says is correct. I personally feel that our just completed political season took a big toll on the WIX; on those that wanted to drag politics into everything and the rest of us who didn't. Not trying to point fingers or lay blame there, just telling it like I see it. Hopefully we'll all get over that little bit of bickering...

As far as charging a fee to post goes: I spent a long time lurking before I ever posted and I can always go back to that. Figure it wouldn't be much of a loss to the board

I think there are many reasons that the "old timers" don't post as much anymore. Most of it has to do with the drama.
It is unnecessary.
We gotta know when to say to ourselves "enough is enough" No reason to beat each other over the head. We are all in this arena for the same reason...our passion for the airplanes. Keep it that way.

That some folks on this board have left is a sad commentary on our behavior.

I have had some very negative reactions when I have asked warbird folks if they post here..."oh hell no" comes to mind. Some folks just come for the news and others see some S! storm and think ..No thanks. That is the nature of the beast but it doesn't have to be that way.

I think the pay to play idea is not a good idea. Like someone says "$5.00 show true love" But there are a bunch of folks who contribute that would not if they had to pay...heck a lot of people won't sign up if an e-mail is required...Like some of those site that only show the photos to registered members.
I would pay $15-20 a year for the site. That's cheaper than all the magazines I used to buy to get my warbird news...of course you can read most of those for free at B&N or some such store.

And on a personal note....Sometimes the "big bucks" I get for moderating this mess is not worth it. Some folks....ah never mind...

Thanks for that reminder there, Mudge. $$$

Good question, some thoughtful posts.

I agree with much of what Zane posted, and again for the mod point of view.

We are all responsible for our own behaviour, manners and attitude. Respect is given, not taken, politeness counts. There are some posters who are real gents, and well informed yet modest contributors, like Gary A; when I grow up I want to be like him. Apart from the shortness that is. ;)

There's been times I'd rather have let it drop recently, and I don't like being attacked personally any more than anyone else. However, given what I've got out of WIX, I've believed the best I can do is stick with it.

The Mods aren't able to get anyone to behave better than they do; we can only chop off the worst as it shows. We certainly 'aint cops, judges counsellors or your mom and pop to keep anyone on the right path.

I've got a lot out of WIX, which is why I put a fair amount in, and no, I don't like the cheap cracks about 'experts' either. It would sure be a howling desert of interest if it was all non-experts here.

HalB's point about the recent US election is a good one. Again, for the non-US members that's a redoubled detraction, we hear more than enough about it everywhere else, without getting it here. I'm interested in vintage aviation globally, and can just do without the politics, please. That includes the paranoia too. Most of us are in stable democracies, and acting like we are in Zimbabwe or North Korea just shows a lack of proportion. Besides, I'd vote for the men in black if they would get a few people to shut up. (Joke...)

I was interested that Forgotten Field had had some 'negative' meetings with WIX members. I've been very careful who I aim to meet up with, and because of that, I've made some great friends and many contacts that wouldn't have happened otherwise.

Just one example - without WIX, David and I wouldn't have met up, we wouldn't have got to see cool aircraft in each other's home patch, and our respective partners would also have missed out meeting up, and they've got a lot in common too. So win win, and something that outranks the occasional stupidities.

Alert! Alert! Personal attack!!! Where's the Moderators when you need them?!?

So, what you're saying is you don't want to be short, but being poor and fat is okay with you? Do you realize how difficult it is for a poor, fat boy to get any support on the street corners, while holding a cardboard sign that says, "Need your help....I'm hungry....Thank you." At least when you're short, poor, and fat, folks will at least feel a little sorry for you then and throw some loose change your way.

Gary

I'll admit I lost my interest in making quality post on WIX for awhile now. I have been going through some personal things in life and its been effecting my mood and sadly I think I let that go on WIX a few times . Yes I try to be respectful and I feel I am still. I have wrote some very detailed and informative threads on this forum in the past. Hoping to generate an interesting discussion they turned out to bring out the "I am better then you additude" that seems to happen time to time. Either that or your time consuming posts are passed by with no replies. Waste of time for me anymore.

So yeah...anymore my posts are pretty well worthless to the mainstreamers I would guess. I am guessing posting stuff like"I hope a B-36 flies again someday" or "whats your favorite war movies" is worthless to some of you. Well thats your right to not find it interesting. But dont belittle the random thoughts and talk that happenes on this site. Sometimes I enjoy those kind of posts more then any other.

On reading this and previous "ugly contest threads", the thought in my head is something my Dad said to me a l-o-n-g time ago:

"You can't legislate morality" (nor politeness, courtesy, intelligence and good humor). All these attributes make for a happy life. Lack of them makes some threads on WIX look as bad as real life.

I really appreciate people who willingly share their knowledge, insight and connections to make some of these threads the Warbird University of the Internet. That's why I keep coming back.

Some posters I just ignore. Some posters I always read.

...had to add...
Some posters remind me of another saying, which I remember before I hit the old reply button:
"Never Wrestle with a pig.
You get dirty, and the pig likes it."

Now, lets get back to Warbirds...
