Not sure what you are seeing, but the Mustang is pretty highly polished. The aircraft are dusted on a rotation that gets them dusted once a week each.

The canopy could use a lick and a promise-especially when you've got it so strongly backlighted

Great photos Chris. Has the museum added more lighting in the Cold War Gallery? The lats time I was there the SR-71 was almost completely lost in the dark!

Yeah, the museum has added new lighting and has also repositioned the Blackbird to a new location in the CWG. With proper lighting the black interior actually makes great pictures.

Something I read online (and we can always trust that, right?) said that, although SSSB was flown to NMUSAF, it would not be flown to Dulles because it had "since been rendered unflyable".

I understand a decision not to risk flying it, but is it true that it was intentionally made UNFLYABLE? If so, how?

You got me on that one. I have never heard of them doing anything to it. I heard she may be staying and that the museum will have three B-17's on display. Something that at this point I will say is only hangar talk, but I hope it is true.

All fingers and toes - CROSSED

IMHO, NASM should restore the B-17 they already have in storage and the other 3 B-17s should share the stage in Dayton. The only argument I see on their side is the length of time they'd have to wait for the restored bird vs. a transfer of SSSB .... but that's it.

Watch this: I'm going to go out on a limb and advocate the AF sending the B-17 AND B-24 currently sitting outside at Barksdale AFB to Dulles instead. BAM!

Great photos. Next time try to get a couple photos of C-124, 52-1066. I'd like to see how she looks today. I was crew chief on it when we were operating out of Chateauroux France during the Congo Airlift. I think they changed it's tail number when it was reassigned to the Reserves and then when it was placed in the museum.

I don't have any at work, but a few at home taken during the restoration once it was moved indooors. It is really complete.
