OK...I'm in information overload here. I don't know whether to plan on spending 2 days, 1 day, or 45 minutes. What camera/lenses to take. Whether to schlep a tripod around......SHEESH.
We're going to tack this trip onto our visit to the D-Day Museum in New Orleans. I'll have to cogitate on it for a while.

If you have never been there you are going to need two days. If you want to see everything that is in the museum you will need two days, or atleast a day and a half. If you think that you only need 45 minutes at the museum, then you clearly don't get it.

My problem is I get "museum-ed out" in about 4 hours, no matter what museum I have visited. Not bored, just "time to go".
I'm with John,
...on the other hand...if it's flying...I can hang out next to the runway, all day long, and watch even Cessna's bounce...

Photography wise, I'd at least get a cheap monopod. When I was shooting film a tripod was absolutely essential, but digital seems to be a lot happier in the low-light conditions. I was there a few weeks ago, and found a $20.00 monopod from Wally World steadied the camera enough to get decent shots.
As for flash, unless you've got a real profession rig, it's not much use. It's fine for getting close-up detail shots, but airplanes are just to big to flash to light evenly.

Either way you go, the museum's lighting isn't all that photographer-friendly. They seem to prefer a dark overall environment with dramatic theatrical lighting.

p.s. My girlfriend loves the museum. She considers one particular plane her namesake...

Reckon I'd be guilty of enjoying watching Cessnas as well. Saw my second first solo in as many days this afternoon (not the airplane below). I work the line, and am a CFI student, I find it's quite interesting.

I have a Canon Rebel XT DSLR and find using the AV mode (Apature priority) the best way to take pictures in low light conditions. Have been successful at indoor carshows.

Most of the thousand or so pix that I have taken at the museum look like the B-10 in your first photo Steve. Yes, I have a crappy Kodak, but in reality, I wonder how many of us Joe Beercan types have similar cameras and find that the majority of their pix turn out just like that 
With a little tweaking on photshop I can get most of them lightened up enough to look OK.
Oh yeah...spending more than 45 minutes at the museum makes one an airplane geek needing treatment? Thank you...I resemble that remark
As an aside...a couple of times now, I have planned a weekend stay in Dayton during the airshow. Go to the museum one day and the airshow the other...depending on the weather. Talk about system overload!!!

I'm not the one that says he can't find anything good to look at in a museum full of 400 warbirds. Oh, I know let me beat you to it, they are just replicas because they don't fly.
