The story that I've gotten from several folks at Lone Star is that even though its strategic mission was obsoleted by ICBMs, when Gorby and Ray Gun Zap were having the SALT talks, the Soviets were so afraid of what that aircraft could do that they refused to budge from their demand that they all be scrapped or at least irreparably del-milled.
'Obsolete' and out of use, it was still badass!
I have a great uncle who is a retired SAC Buff driver who was offered the chance to transition to B-58's. His refusal was 'beyond insubordinate'.
And yes, the cockpit is an empty hull and the plane captain occasionally spears fuzzy reindeer antlers on the pointy nose during the holidays.
