I remember the initial designs of the Boeing 777 had a wing fold as an option (I kind you not!) This was to save on gate space. No airline took up the option and Boeing quietly dropped the it. Proberbly to a huge sigh of relief from the people at Seattle who were going to have to make it work.
On the same subject The RAF lost a F-4 through the wing being left in the folded position and the pilot trying to take off. I have also heard of an F-8 and an A-7 being lost in the same way. Have any one of you guys heard the same thing? Or are they jus aviation "urban myths"?

I've heard of several jet carrier types being lost due to being cat fired at night, despite the safeguards. (Not heard of an RN / FAA ? RAF F-4 though, not that counts fore anything, not being my field...) However, a couple of US aircraft managed to fly despite having folded wings, after a cat firing, and I wonder who can fill us in, this having been discussed before...
