Those who possess real knowledge are rare.

Those who can set that knowledge into motion in the physical world are rarer still.

The few who possess real knowledge and can set it into motion of their own hands are the rarest of all.

As the 'barrel' in which the starting point for a Spitfire reconstruction is 'scraped' ever cleaner, I personally have no problems.

Several Spitfires now flying started with little more than a firewall, including three, PT462, MH367 & SM520, configured as new build two seaters. There are further such reconstructions in the pipeline.

In each and every case there is a clear 100% provenance trail back to an original RAF serial and identity. 'Thin but robust' provenance with total transparency has been the order of the day.

In the case of the two 'Turkish Delights' ML411 & MJ147, the latter reported to have been exported from the UK to the USA, there is no transparency.

Reported as recovered from Turkey about ten years ago, not one sighting or image has surfaced.

I would be the first to acknowledge and respect the right to privacy in these matters...however strategic appeals for parts and finance at various venues have bought these two 'Spitfires' very much in to the public domain.

With an ever thickening file of bile filled 'anonymous' hate mail to the world-wide Spitfire Glitterati, and forwarded on to me with concern, I am beginning to think I may have touched a raw nerve with this one.

I am sure I am not alone in waiting to hear back from Panzer with eager anticipation. One can only imagine that if anyone has bought shares in this Spitfire project then they would have seen photos or the Spitfire(s) they have bought shares in? The operator of this undertaking would doubtless have more interest, and potential shareholders, if the reality of his project could be seen. Otherwise, it has no more credibility to most people than those "scam" e-mails from deepest Africa asking for a deposit of £/$'s and your bank account details to secure guaranteed £/$ millions!!! We all look forward to seeing more information, Panzer, and sincerely hope you do not get your fingers burnt.

Indeed we do. Since 'Panzer' is a first-time poster and pops up here to effectively advertise this controversial project, is it possible that he is in fact the seller?

I remain unconvinced as to the authenticity of this Spitfire, and will remain so until I see evidence to the contrary.

I visited Ray's shop Thursday, and they are removing the upper skin on the left wing to check for internal damage. I'm hoping. It sure is hard to see her like that, especially right in the middle of flying and show season. It feels sort of like I backed out of the driveway and ran over my son's new bike. Doesn't feel too good, no matter who left the bike there.

The photo was taken in 1994 during the Phoenix 500 Air Race days at Williams AFB (Phoenix-Mesa Gateway). Those were the days.... Now almost all of the airports are fenced and locked.
Post some photos of the restoration when you can.

The provenance trail of MH367 is interesting. The machine was built as a 'new build' TR.9 by Dick Melton with no pretention of having any military history. The recovery of the firewall of MH367 from Flowers scrapyard was a number of years later .

Perhaps a more accurate statement would be:-

The machine was initiated as a 'new build' TR.9 fuselage by Dick Melton with no pretension of having any military history but not completed, prior to sale to the US.

Harry Stenger, of Bartow Florida, completed the sheetmetal, incorporating parts of the front fuselage of MH367, sub contracted the wings and installed all the systems prior to first flight.

In respect of originality provenance it contains less than most, but more than some, of Spitfires currently flying....and is totally transparent.

Peter - I was refering to your earlier statement on the 'new build' TR9's -strictly speaking there are no 'new build' Spitfires as we all know that new production isn't something that happens! Certainly there will be further machines created from even less ! However getting back to TR.9's - if you build one and don't strictly follow the drawings of Vickers Supermarine is it really a TR.9 or should it have it's own designation??
