An additional factor is that the owner claimed to be in the habit of loaning the plane to others, one can only speculate how they operated it.

I don't think the a/c was treated like a rental though. If he was loaning to guys like Bob Guilford then he was a trusting quality people

I suspect the same can be said of Hoover...........................my point is that from my reading of the info available here the possibility exists that there is much we don't know about the operational history of the aircraft but seem ready to ascribe full responsibility to the last operator with extremely limited information.

I would feel safe in assuming 2 things.......
1. At only 60 hours since restoration inc engine and prop it was a nice a/c
2. With his FAA hearing to get his medical back only a week away and not having flown in almost a year he may wanted to prove he still had the "magic".

What value is demonstrating he still has the flying magic, if his objective was to get his medical back?

I have to agree with that. There would be many possible approaches to this situation including flying very conservatively, so Hoover's situation viz. his medical really doesn't inform us as to what his intentions were.

For K5083: August
First, would it be likely that Hoover's attorney would advise him not to make any offer of partial payment as that would be an admission of guilt?

Next, do you believe the plane was most likely damaged by S. American drug dealers, or is that theory out of vogue? ( I just couldn't resist)

Gary, you seem to be saying the AIRFRAME damage was done by Bob's high g flying. That is not even what the owner alleges, he says the airframe damage was the result of the sudden and severe engine stoppage, thus a twist to the airframe. I think it would be highly unlikely that Bob damaged the airframe directly through high g, apart from the engine, and the other pilot was not claiming there was high g either. I can never recall any time in his airshow career that he did that, and he would not have needed real high g to do his routine.
The question is the engine, oil starvation from possible neg g, not direct damage to the airframe, unless I missed something.

An engine 60 hours out of overhaul is well and truly in the "danger zone". If they last the "first" 100 or so they will usually keep going until sometime near the "last" 100 if well maintained and operated.

In my old DC-3 operation we had an engine that failed on installation - seized in fact after a master-rod bearing failure. The engine was from Page in OK. We had done all necessary pre-oiling, new cooler etc etc and she let go. Take a look at Sally B-17 in UK right now. Two apparent "dud" engines in the same #1 position. She's grounded..

No one's p*ssing at all, this is a very good debate, let it go, no one is stepping on anyone here at all. Keep the debate going, the truth will be told. Several people here enjoy a good debate, and there is a lot to learn from this as well. If you're not interested, there's several other great threads that can interest you.

Well I don't know but Bob H. said..............
Hoover explained that he had not flown in ten months, and wanted to get the rust off.
If I understand his FAA hearing transcript correctly he flew a demonstration flight in the Shrike has part of the process.
Hoover described the demonstration he performed during the trial,
So I guess that answers your question

Twice.......TWICE we have had the engine go in our T-28C at about 100 hrs

I personally think your very lucky if it makes 200 hours before it goes.

You guys sure are quick to show blame. Our airplane was very well restored and the engine rebuilder was a VERY BIG name restorer........and he did it twice on ours!!!!!!!!!!!!

We then went to JRS and ours was one of the last out of that shop..........and we are approaching 100 hrs now............think we are not thinking about that?

Also, I agree with Bill about Hoover's Attorney probably advising him to stay quiet............plus, Hoover would not have the money to rebuild the motor much less the entire airplane.........

get a grip and let's quit bashing every American hero that exists

Just hoping that ya'll get this out of your system once and for all so we can all get back to the fun stuff here at WIX! I'm with the monority in that what is the point in bashing someone here on a public forum? If yer gonna bash, how about we bash someone like Boyington or Yeager who really deserve it??? If any of ya'll personally know Mr Hoover, maybe ask him to come in here and make a statement in his defense. From what little I have gathered about Mr Hoover, he is much more of a fine gentleman than Yeager could ever dream of being. Doesn't seem to matter much in these days of frivilous lawsuits over someone getting burned by a hot cup of coffee. Yeah, yeah, I am a very simple minded person...I just don't like seeing someone like Mr Hoover getting raked over the coals on a public forum like this.

OK...I'll go stand in the corner now with Mudge...got any cold beer Mudge :P
