I thought that not all CC&F built Hurricanes came without spinners? I could swear that I've seen more than a few pics of Canadian Hurris with that oddly-shaped spinner, as is fitted to the FHC's example.

It is not unusual for Canadian Hurricanes to carry the "Canadian" spinner. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if BW881 carried it during service. However, RCAF 5429 did not have a spinner, and since they replicated it so well, IMO I wish they left it off. Plus it would be so different from other Hurricanes.

Just to prove your point some 1 OTU CCF Hurricanes with spinners. First one has a tropical filter...very important in the Canadian snow.

Jim

thanks, I get your point now! What is the deal with the tropical filter??? I never realized that any Canadian Hurris were fitted with those; was it a retrofit from a UK built example, or were said filters actually built in Canada as well?

Not to hijack the thread of course......

And I can't wait for more pics of the FHC '109!

cheers

No idea of why there is a Tropical filter on that Hurri. (I'm pretty sure it is CCF build.) But it is cool.

Slightly confused here, which 109 is this? ... are there 3 of this type in the states now? ... ex-Champlin 109?, Russel Group's 109? .... and this beauty?

ex-Champlin was a Hispano built 109 and was converted to Me-109 standards by Champlin but i dont believe it was ever active. Now with the Seattle museum of flight.

But what about Fighter Factory's example? Is she an Me-109 or Bf? Dreaming to see all three together at some show! Maybe Thunder?

There are many more than that here in the States. This one was restored by Craig Charleston on the Isle of Wight in Great Britain. I don't have the particular Werk number at the moment.

How many 109's actually fly in the states? or can fly? I've never been able to really find out. How many Hispano's as well?

And not to be nosey, but any photo's of Paul's P-47 and F6F? .... I'm not sure if I know of these two as well.

Im curious as to know as well. How many total are flying in N.A.? How many in Europe? Total ratio from hispano to original DB engine?

The two German engined 109s flying in North America were both built by Craig Charleston. The only other 109 variant that I am aware of flying recently is Harold Kinsvater's HA-1112:

Planes of Fame's HA-1112 may be flying soon as well.

As far as how many 109's/Hispanos fly, that is a grey, murky area. So many 109's are actually hybrid's incorporating parts from HA-1109's and HA-1112's, that it's difficult to say. The other problem is that nearly every single flying -109 or Hispano has had a landing or takeoff incident that has caused damage and grounded it for some time. In North America only, I believe the flying ones include:

1) Harold Kinsvater's Hispano
2) The CAF's Hispano
3) The POF's Hispano (currently being refurbished after a landing accident from the Pearl Harbor movie, scheduled to fly in May)
4) Russel's -109
5) Paul Allen's -109

I can't think of any others, but maybe someone can chime in here.

There are also several other airframes that are airworthy, but don't fly.

Sounds like Fighter Rebuilders have finished the new-build 2-seat Zero at last. A shame it couldn't stay at Chino another week for the show.

Yea, no kidding! That plane was becoming such a fixture at the POF, that a lot of people thought it was owned by them. That thing has been there since, what, about 2001? It will be nice to see a two seat version fly. That would be awesome if FHC would sell rides in it to support the new museum at Paine field. But since Paul Allen is a billionaire, I doubt something so insignificant as a few thousand dollars would much matter to him. :D

Sorry Mark, I don't have any photos of those airplanes for you. Hopefully, someone here can provide them for you. The Hellcat is the old "Flying A Services" version, formerly of Doug Arnold and his son. I'm sure some of our UK members have pictures of it from there. I don't think anything has changed on it since it was imported from overseas.
