Those are actually fair salaries considering their worth to the Yankees in terms of income to the organization. As they say, if we could do what they can do, well ... we'd be worth a lot to the Yanks, too. :D 8)

Well, that's a totally different train to derail this thread with, but my theory is this. They've priced pro sports out of the affordable range of a middle-class family. They can talk about making 'what the market will bear' all they want, but during the last strike I did a bit of figuring, and discovered that if I had the correct lump of change, I could either:

A) Pay the nursing staff on the floor of the urological/general surgery unit where my wife was an RN for 2.73 days

OR

B) Pay Barry Bonds to play one game of baseball out of the entire season.

I graduated high school 3 years ago and in my US History class (junior year) we spent 2 weeks on WWII. Clearly that isn't enough time, it's just enough time for the basics and that's it.

That's just it. My friends. all of which were college grads, and what I think are pretty smart people watched Pearl harbor in the theatre. Afterwards, asked me, "hey that whole Dolittle thing was nuts, could you imagine if they had actually done that? It would have been a suicide mission." That is when I had to let them know that it was not made up, and very much real. That is how much our current history book teaches about WWII

I can guarantee that she has had a lot more at home ! Force fed of course, but more has sunk in than she will admit !

Rick she is right. When I was in highschool about 9 years ago, that is all of the time they spent on it. If you think that is a joke, ask her how much time they spend on Vietnam and Korea. My school had us through WWII in three days. One day was the battles leading up to the Pacific, another for the Germans in Europe, and then the conclusion. THat was it folks.

Well, folks, how much time CAN be spent teaching WWII in an American history class?

Pretend you're the teacher. As an educator, your state's DPI holds you responsible for covering everything from pre-Columbian tribes up to the Middle East conflicts. You have 36 weeks to cover it all.

Having done exactly this for the past 20 years, I can tell you that your suggestion of a thorough examination of WWII in an American history class is a pipe dream. The teacher's job is to create in the student an increased awareness (and, ideally, an increased desire to learn more on his own) of ALL periods of American history, not just WWII.

Rather than using bandwidth to bemoan the system, the teachers, the parents, or the students, why not brainstorm some ways that we can encourage the young (and not so young) to desire an increased level of knowledge in what we of the WIX hold near and dear?

Rant over. Now, let's get back to bashing lawyers and used car salesmen. :D

Take away the I-pods, Gameboys, WiI's, computer, cell phones, and all that other junk, toss it, and introduce the little darlings to books, and have them fill their time and minds with information, and not just hi tech crap... This country would be far better served by detechnologizing!

Agree with all but the computer and cell phone. :D

I don't now, nor will I ever own any of that other time-wasting crap you mention. Bruce Li (Lee), I think it was, said the most valuable thing you have is your time. Heck, with a gun to my head I couldn't tell you what a Wii (sp?) is, other than it's some sort of game?? My parents encouraged me to spend a lot of time outside using my imagination, and large pecan trees on our property were excellent for building 'way cool' treehouses (how many kids today do that ... oops, neighborhood covenants!), and great teachers (the most important job in the United States of America) introduced me to books, a lifelong love - and art teachers encouraged me to create ... thus, no time for techno-crap.

Erm...Okay.

Why isn't this smashed across every front page in America?

I will fight you to the death if you try to take my iPod, computer and cell phone. My kids will never have a playstation or any of that crap. They're too addicting. I had friends in college who had a nintendo and they both flunked out.

Sat Mar 22, 2008 9:26 pm

Hey ! You don't need a Playstation to flunk ,...er, nevermind.

Sun Mar 23, 2008 2:19 am

And to think that not too many years ago alcohol and skirts were plenty enough to help students flunk out of college.

Taliban?

Methinks you have no idea what Taliban means, then.

Great post.

I think that "enthusiasts" of any particular thing/era/idea tend to overthink the importance of that item.

We on the WIX are naturally going to be predisposed to thinking that the entire history of the 20th century hinges on 6 years in the 30s and 40s because that is something we find interesting.
