"Saving Private Ryan" was a great movie, well acted, directed etc, but not a great money maker, it probably wouldn't have been made without Speilberg and Hanks being involved
Sorry Hellcat but I am going to have to respectfully disagree with you. "Saving Private Ryan" grossed $216 M in box office receipts while "Pearl Harbor" grossed $198 M. Micheal Bay may be doing well but Steven Spielberg is the second most successful filmmaker of all time despite some of Micheal Bay's successes.
I have been around the block a few times myself.
I happen to have a feeling that this production team may try and redeem itself with a much more realistic aviation movie in the not so distant future...

She has learned about airplanes from airshows and museums.
She loves both guns and airplanes.
I figure she's a keeper.

Very true indeed, but in overall sales ... talking DVD's, rentals, etc, .... PH will surpass SPR, if not already, soon. .... and comparing Bay and Spielberg is like comparing ... Britney Spears to Angelina Jolie ...

Pearl Harbor took in $450 m in total revenue
Saving Private Ryan took in $480 m in total revenue
Pearl Harbor had a budget of $132 m
Saving Private Ryan had a budget of $70 m
Both of the movies are likely to continue similar trends in DVD sales and if I was to venture a guess i would bet that Private Ryan DVD sales are higher on an annual basis.
The best thing that came out of Pearl Harbor is the DVD cover and posters most of which were designed by my friend. Also pleased that Aero Trader, Westpac were able to make some money to keep their birds flying.

There's a very famous line, from a very famous movie ... that move was called "From Dusk Till Dawn" .... starring some of our very best actors of all time, George Clooney, Harvey Keitel and Cheech Marin ... and if memory recalls, I think Cheech Marin was nominated for best supporting actor in this classic. ... Anyway at one point in the movie, Harvey Keitel says to George Clooney .... "Are you that stupid, that you can't even tell when you've won?" ... well the last time I was moved by such beautifully written diolog, was when Bluto spoke those patriotic and emotionally moving words in "Animal House" .... Ahh! ... what was it again? ... something about when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? ... well, no matter, You've won, I lost ....

I know that todays movie set has to have more than just one thing going for the attention deficit movie crowd. Simple well told stories just do not seem to fly anymore. How many times have they made a great movie that did not make a dime and some total flaming dung heat like PH with some much fluff that actually sold tickets, heck, I even bought the DVD, but only at the great discounted price of only $5 bucks!
Memphis Belle had a crew that would have fit right in at McDonalds, nobody got along, always trying to outdo each other, all except for the emo kid at the back window/tailgun position. If they would have tried to play it straight nobody would have cared because it would have been ten guys just doing their jobs.
The movie may have been better if they would have used people who could actually act a little or fake it well.
I watched if for the planes and that is the only reason I even bothered to buy the DVD. As for Saving Pvt. Ryan, that is mandatory watching every Memorial Day since I got the movie on DVD.
We need a Saving Pvt. Ryan for the warbird crowd.
Give me those Tank Buster P-51's!!!
