It is about time that there was a P-51 free zone, Now that's got your attention hasn't it! As a professional aircraft airframe fitter who has been involved in air worthy restorations of a number of vintage aircraft including Mustangs, i am feed up with the ever increasing hoard of gumby's who fill these site with rubbish. Yes there are those who do have intelligent comments and observations to make and these are most welcome, but the the ever increasing rivet counters and hangers on are driving me crazy. These people have been banned from our restoration workshop and viewing is by pre arrangement or invitation only. We can get on with our work with out the stimulating conversation around the number of rivits in an aileron, yes it happens. If anyone knows of a registered only site where vintage aviation can be discussed on an intelligent level , please advise. May be I'll start my own.

Let me know if you get that site. :D

Hey, that's mine! ;) I never did get the bumper sticker made.

Being constructive, it would be good to get more engineering input into the 'Maintenance Hanger' section of the WIX. I know from personal experience it's sometimes hard to get good input from our engineering colleagues, but when we do, it's always popular here and leads onto very worthwhile discussions. Need I mention Gary's Ol 927 thread, or the excellent threads leading to very interesting and worthwhile feedback on the Sabre annual and the ongoing rebuild of the PBJ.

I love the Mustang and I love all the other warbirds out there. What's the big deal?

Does anybody remember the reason John Schafenhausen choose N921 as the registration number for his P-51 "Cripe's a Mighty" when it was first restored?
It was code for a saying he and his friends had amongst themselves. Can anybody answer the question?

Jerry

My sincerest apologies for neglecting to give credit where it is due :)

I agree, more input on projects from the engineering/fabrication side would be most welcome here!

Okay everyone calm down :)

When I started WIX it was with several goals. The first being to keep the Warbirds Worldwide online community together. The second was to bring all of the warbird enthusiast together and allow them to interact with other and enthusiasts as well as warbird owners and operators. We have been quite successful at doing both. Some owners and warbird "people" come off as elitist at times because they are asked the same questions repeatedly and anybody would tire of that pretty quickly. On the other hand, some enthusiasts come off as geeks because they are obsessive about the subject but have limited access to the aircraft. What they know is usually from books. So when they get access to somebody or some aircraft they tend to gush at the best of times, and hyper criticize at the worst. We all need to show a little tolerance and look at things from the others viewpoint, have a little patience, and show some respect for each other and a little discretion before we speak or post.

And yes, I have joked that the P-51 is the Cessna of warbirds, but do you know what? It is still a WARBIRD, and there is no such thing as a bad warbird or too many of them.

And that folks, is the best post in this thread!

Well...the P-51 IS a kinda' OK airplane. My personal preference is the P-38 (surprise...surprise). I can empathize with propedup though. We have a few "rivet counters" on this here forum. I can understand his frustration with the "rivet counters" in his face while he's trying to work.
Propedup...unless they're making large cash contributions to your restoration project, I'd tell 'em to "bugger off". Simple as that. I hope you're not afraid you're going to hurt their feelings.

Mudge the harsh

ps. even with unlimited funds, a P-51 would not be my first choice.

personally i've been bored with the p-51 for years, & i am always seeking out more obscure warbirds, that's only my own preference. but i can tell you i have alot of respect for the p-51, & so did countless others who attended the mustang gathering in columbus ohio recently. (me included)

Well a new day has dawned and as i read the new posts on this thread i see that there is a glimmer of support for my concerns, (thanks Mudge and others) But in the cold light of the new day, i must admit a bull in a china shop would of been some what kinder. So i do apologize to all you folk who have taken exception to this rather interesting discussion, to see a comment from the big man himself lend some weight to the feelings raised. I do stand by my thoughts on the access issue of public to aircraft under restoration or maintenance, public education is important but not at their whim. So to all you folk who think i am not worthy to grace this site, as a once much maligned gentleman from this part of the world ones said, "such is life" It's time to move on and get on with what we all do best.

P.S. If anyone wishes to continue the on a more personal level try micklives@hotmail.com

Let's hear it for the North American O-47. Another North American product, specifically of Dundalk Maryland. If you haven't been to Dundalk, you have missed something. A Captain Harvey's cheese steak is just heaven on earth.

If I may, I don't think that anyone on this board would object to your opinion about the Mustang. Many would certainly agree with your frustration over rivet counters, as many of us have had similar experiences.

IMHO, you came out of the chute riding Wildfire when perhaps a better approach may have been...Hey WIX'ers. I am becoming increasingly miffed with these "so called experts" who visit my shop and express their obnoxious knowledge about the aircraft I work with. Any of you get the same? yada yada yada

The message can be the same, the results the same but it begs the question, did you come to start a discussion with fellow enthusiasts or to start a fight?

We love discussions...

JDK, before you head out to the trademark office; at the hanger party in Breckenridge about 25yrs ago, I heard John MacGuire say to Connie Edwards that "P-51s were Cessna warbirds, sooner or later everybody will have one!"

I've heard the version attributed to one of those folks, and it's not suitable for a family forum like here... ;)

proped up,

Just in case nobody has come out & said it...Welcome to WIX. I think that you'll find that for the most part, we're a pretty good group that play well together for the most part.

If you don't mind my asking, what is the type of warbird that you primarily have going through your shop?

Mac
