I'll say it here, and everywhere else I can find it mentioned (or shown)...
I want to thank everyone, including the Collings Foundation, for making the flight of two B-24's happen! It may sound hokie, but from the time I started the conversion of Ol' 927, it was a dream of mine to get both B-24's in the air together. I don't miss touring with the airplane at all, but I must admit I'm jealous of those who got to go on that flight. It must've been a great feeling!

Thank you!!!

Gary

And to top it off Gary, they both launched at the same time, going down the two runways (27L and 27R) and almost lifting off simultaneously!!!

What was the weather like on Sunday compared to Saturday? We were only there on Saturday, and it was a little disappointing that the sun always seemed to be blocked during the best stuff, though it was still a great day at Thunder!

Probably more clouds than on Saturday, and the wind was too strong for the parachute drop. M O'L was also doing a lot of air to airs with the planes during the show, so we didn't get as many passes on Saturday, such as Sunday only had the P-47's in the battle re-enactment without the four-ship passes that we had the day before.

On the other hand, we had the Hurricane join the 109 for the morning battle and of course the previosuly mentioned two B-24's (ducking for cover) flying together. The TBM's and Wildcats also flew a racetrack pattern behind us for some excellent banking passes!!

Mid afternoon we caught one light spritz of rain/sprinkles that sent most of the folks with cameras running for cover, but it ended quickly. About half an hour after the show, rain started coming down like on Saturday.

The Wildcat flight Sunday was breath taking! I wish there were more demos like that with warbirds.

Gary,
I think I speak for the majority of the folks here when I say Thank YOU for the blood, sweat and tears you put into Ol' 927 so us, the public have the opportunity and honor to see this historic bird flying. It is people like you and all the others that keep these beautiful birds in the air that I think of when I see my daughter watch in amazement.
This is my thank you to YOU.

Mark

Tim, I am now out of "lurk mode".

WOW! Awesome photos! Especially of the 2 B-24s. Glad they did manage to get them to fly together on Sunday.

Also, it was a real pleasure to meet you and the rest of the WIX gang and WIX wives Saturday night at the Holiday Inn. Now I know what a great and knowledgeable bunch you all are. And now I know what you all look like which will prevent me from going up to a table full of strange guys and announce to them that I'm a "WIX Lurker". Yes, you should've seen the looks on their faces. My friends and I are still laughing over that one! I'll never live it down

Here's to you all :partyman:

I couldn't describe to you the emotions I was feeling as I saw the only 2 airworthy Liberators pass overhead. It was especially amazing to me since my grandfather had served on the venerable B-24 during the war. A shame he wasn't there today to have see it that day.

Regardless, it was a weekend I will never forget. Thank you Michael Luther for putting on a great show! And thank you for everyone involved with the show that created something fantastic. I don't know any other show in the country that you get to see a giant reenactment battle with 4 thunderbolts on the deck whizzing by! Truly an awesome weekend.

Though I will say that there are a few things I didn't like about the show. I am not blaming any one person and completely understand if certain situations were out of the hands of other people.

But I feel that the reenactors suffered with not being able to camp out in their usual spots like in 06. It took away from the illusion that you were transported back to 1944. Also I will say that I don't believe the ramp was set up well enough. Remember I am no airboss by any means, just merely commenting on what I saw. I am always a fan of long line ups of fighters and bombers but if their were obstacles that couldn't be hurdled because of this, than that is perfectly ok. The one other thing is that my father and I searched up and down for the DVD tent so we could pre-order the video of the airshow. But alas found no such tent. Was there no group filming for the airshow? If so I am deeply saddened that there is no high quality footage of this amazing past weekend.

Other than those quirks I had, it was a great weekend. Thanks again for the memories. (Ducking behind cover)

First post in a while....

I got to work the ramp this year at Thunder (If anyone saw the ramp rat that lost his hat during the TBM / Wildcat startup on Saturday, that was me. I hate that f'ing hat, and curse the name of the guy from the Russel group that caught it and returned it to me. ). These are just my opinions, and are not intended to represent Yankee, Kevin & Mike, or anyone else.

This show was the first time in many years (perhaps the first ToM, not sure about that) to use an entirely Yankee Ramp crew. Every ramp rat out there was a Yankee Ramp Rat. From my perspective, the ramp layout was very good, and worked well, but I can certainly see why some people weren't happy with a few things. For us, it was easier to launch and recover aircraft. Pilots could show up a few minutes before engine start, and be on their way quickly.

As a fan, I'd have been bummed if I could only have seen "Old Crow" or the Mig-21 from 50+ feet away. Ditto the ride-selling warbirds that were down the ramp. I know in the Mig-21's case, they flew on Friday and were at least going to try and fly during the show, hence their spot on the "hot" ramp. Unfortunately, things just ended up not working out. Although, everything on the hot ramp flew during the show at some point, sans the Mig. So that's some consolation.

But on the plus side, we didn't have to raise an army of CAP cadets and security people to shoo the crowd to a safe distance when we started an airplane. I know that helped keep the show on schedule, was a bit safer for the general public, and probably kept people fans a bit happier (there's always "that guy" that gets p*ssy because someone asked him to move, or "that security guy" that thinks his radio and store bought cammies entitles him to act like Rambo meets Chuck Norris.)

I'm glad the weather held out at least for Saturday. I had to leave early Sunday, but heard that the jumpers didn't get to go. I will say that the fans this year seemed really great. During the whole weekend I only had one bad experience with a fan. Everyone else was fantastic, and not one person was rude or inconsiderate when I had to ask them for something. A great crowd in every sense of the word.

Here's my ToM flickr photoset. After a mere ten hours on the ramp Friday, I managed to get free for a quickie run around the aircraft before we closed up shop and went to dinner.

http://flickr.com/photos/tenthousandmarbles/sets/72157606623350589/

But my favorite shot of the weekend is this one. This just to proves how hard Gary had to work to get Old 927 in the shape she's in. Heck, if it takes 12 people and two tugs just to tow the aircraft anywhere, imagine how hard it must be to change the oil.

(the first tug vapor locked just after we hooked up. We were in the process of unhooking the tug and hooking up the second tug to move the first when the first tug refired.)
