She really looks good. I love the shots from the front, she looks to be standing tall and proud.

I envision her being painted like she looked on the night of June 5, 1944 with free-hand painted D-Day stripes. But that's just me, because she'll look wonderful however you guys paint her.

Some aluminum oxide "sand"paper using progressively finer grit paper. Need to make sure the paper is aluminum based to prevent further corrosion that would be caused by using sand or steel based grit on the paper

The best product for what you are doing are some of the 3M pads that screw into a rotary holder that can be used with a die grinder or drill. The product itself is the fibre material that is used to clean dishes (if you don't have a dishwasher!) .There are various different grades depending on coarseness but they are superb at getting back to a clean usable surface. They apply Alochrome 1200 and then your etch primer. Sand blasting cannot be used as it generates high surface heat which results in surface distorsion . There are other media that can be used and these are often walnut based.

These are great pads when used in the correct way. I have used these pads for years and i would encourage you to be VERY careful when using them as you can remove a LOT of material very quickly. Sometimes too quickly. I don't think that i would recommend them for relatively thin aluminium. They are much more aggressive than a polisher. Be Careful !!!

We are in need of some service bulletins for our C-47. Please see this thread and reply there if you have any of those we need. viewtopic.php?f=26&t=50576

Thanks

BTW, our Aviation Day was a complete success and we had probably a 1000 or more visitors come through! The Ramp was packed with probably 100 or more vintage cars at all time along with probably 10 a/c, excluding our own, at all times. At one point, our ramp was filled and plane had to park on another nearby ramp. Thanks for all of those who came out.

Prior to Aviation Appreciation Day (AAD), the rudder was taken off the plane and was stripped of its fabric. So far, it looks to be in very good condition, but it has not had a detailed inspection yet. Hopefully, it will just require stripping the old primer and repainting and then recovering.

Also here is a pic from early morning on AAD before the large crowd showed up. All of the photos so far in this thread have been mine, however I was so busy during the day, I never took any photos so this photo is not mine. However, it was uploaded onto our facebook page by one of the other page moderators.

She is once again back in the hangar to have work start back up again tomorrow.

Also, only 22 days remain on our fund raiser for "Luck of the Irish". So if you already haven't donated, but can spare a few dollars, a donation would be greatly appreciated!

I should have pointed out that various grades are available for the 3M pads . As groundpounder pointed out caution is advised but with care they do achieve a good finish.

Haven't had any updates lately but work is still chugging along. Paint stripping is a little bit further along than the last update, but I have not had the chance to do any stripping myself since mid Aug.

Tomorrow will be an important day though as we will be having our second meeting with the FAA on her. Absolute best case scenario, we will be receiving the approval for the maintenance plan and it's Airworthiness Certificate. However, we are expecting more realistically that after tomorrow, we will have just one more meeting with the FSDO which everything will be approved then.

A BIG THANK YOU goes out Fellow member BDK and Boeing. He provided me with contact info for Boeing, who in turn sent us all of the needed service bulletins and an extra manual that will help in maintaining her. Those documents completed all the paper work we have on the plane and allowed us to schedule the meeting with the FSDO.

I did find out that we have interest for its first appearance next year on Memorial Day for a 70th anniversary memorial flight for the Normandy invasion. So we are going to try and push to have it done and painted by then.

The plane is currently still in the hangar but will be removed from the hangar by January as we will have to bring in the Thunder Pig for its annual. Our hangar is not big enough to have both inside at the same time, so while the pig is in, work will almost completely stop on the 47 unless we can come up with the money and work out a deal with the county to hangar it in another hangar on the field. We will have to complete the Pig's annual in a record period of time to be ale to bring the 47 back in to finish it up prior to May.

It will be licensed as Experimental Exhibition, which it already is from when it was used as a spray bird. It probably would not take much for us to put it back into a standard category though once we get it in the air. It will be maintained as if it was a standard category aircraft though.

It will be flown under part 91 rules initiallly. However, we are toying with the idea of carrying passengers in it to air shows so what rules will govern us may change.
