Jack, I am dead a$$ with you on this one. First, you & I both know Steve Blake's reputation, my father had a good bit of correspondence with him on the 363rd Fighter Group Book, second Felix flew with the 363rd, & I had the pleasure of spending some time with him at one of my Dad's reunions, & he ain't no Bu!! poo poo Bill, & finally Carr flew in the 363rd, & got kicked out for some unauthorized flying (as I understand it) which left quite an impression as Carr being a "Cowboy" with the other pilots in the Group. Now my ole man was not there, but he knew Carr, & when ever this subject came up, he called BS on it too. I have the upmost respect for Carr, & all of our pilots that flew & fought for our country, but Carr ain't the only AAF flyer that had "Sea Stories". :D

OK I'll believe you about Carr but just don't tell me that Bob Hoover didn't steal a Fw 190 when he escaped from that prison camp......I wonder if there is any accounting of how many escapees or evadees managed to steal aircraft from the enemy.....

Bob Curtiss (a 14 kill Spit/P-51 ace in the 52nd FG) was very upset when Bob Hoover claimed that 2 pilots
cut and ran leaving him to be shot down.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if it was a mechanical failure that prevented the gear from lowering, or was it pilot error?
