Looking at the accident aircraft I see a destroyed R/H wing, fuselage and carry through spar. That's just the obvious.
Repairing all of this would definately cost more than buying another airframe. Especially after factoring in spares recovery.
That's why I said beyond economical repair.

That is a shame. One of the reports referred to it as the worlds oldest flying Chipmunk. Anyone know if that is indeed the case?

I don't think that is accurate info
As far as I am aware the oldest airworthy Chipmunk is G-AKDN.
That's Canadian built, s/n 11.
I've even been fortunate enough to fly that one

The accident machine is a British built example.

It's being reported as the third built by DHC at Downsview in 1946 and went to de Havilland South America in Argentina almost immediately, I imagine as a demonstrator. G-AKDN is certainly the oldest flyer in the UK.

Edit: also reported as c/n 10 which came to the UK as G-AJVD, reregistered as G-ARFW and damaged beyond repair at Cherbourg in 1966.

My copy of "The poor man's Spitfire" shows LV-NRY as Canadian s/n 3.
Such a needless waste.
