I've heard that the Airpower molds still exist, but the hangup on a reissue is the wires--either they can't be reproduced, or it would be far too expensive to do so, or something. Just passing it along; I can't vouch for the truth of this.

I hadn’t watched the excellent video posted by John B prior to this posting. The second link is to the website for people who made the video and has many details contained in that video. I remember this kit when it came out in 1959. As I was 11 years old it was way out of my price range. I could sometimes scrape up $1.00 for a model.

Vzlet was correct on both counts. The first photo in the original post is definitely reversed, and it is Eglin AFB in Florida. I have flipped this 1956 photo and compared it to a Google Earth shot, looking north, from 2013. It's not quite an exact match in terms of altitude and viewing angle, but it's fairly close.
