Great to see: I assume this clears the decks for another DM BUFF to replace "Neanderthaul" lost on Guam?

On the 'age' thing, a recent quote I heard was that the last crew to fly a B-52 probably hasn't been born yet. One amazing machine.

Awesome, looking at the high res images of the nose art you can definitely see that the artist liked the Iron Maiden album "killers". Cool to see this plane back in the force!

Maybe a loose inspiration Tom, but I thought "Eddie" was a zombie. The Ghost Rider is a...well...er..a ghost with a skull...er I guess. I wish I could find a close-up of GR's nose art. There's detail in the flight suit and the background I wouldn't mind seeing. Lessee if I can make make this zoomable(of Lon's posted photo) from the link from the previous page, function...

EDIT-Nope not gonna work

EDIT EDIT- That got it!

I can't disagree with ya there Tom..there is a family resemblance. The eyeballs on GR's goggles are a nice touch! :D

How many B-52H's do they still have in mothballed storage?

12 according to this source:

Also quite a few G's to provide spares, but many of these have been cut to comply with START, so only these 12 H's really have any chance of resurrection.

The B-52Hs at DM are in a special category of storage, specifically as replacement airframes. Any other B-52s there (I doubt any left now) are spares-only. Flying fleet is restricted to 75 a/c, so replacements are only on a one-for-one basis. Thus we are due another DM resurrection to replace the Guam loss.

My quick Google Earth scan (2016 image) shows 108 airframes left.

The 12 intact H's are in the North West corner- a cluster of 11 and 1 on "celebrity row" just south of the cluster.

Other groups to the south east. Clusters of 29, 19, 27 and 21. Likely mostly (all?) G's. All cut to comply with START.

The images showing my rough count of 108 are from 11/06/2015- I call that fairly recent. You have to go to google earth to see the image dates- and you can scroll through a time line to see older Buffs there. The oldest overhead is from 5/92 and there must be close to 300 Buffs in the same area. I did not count. :D

Dave,

Thanks for the clarification - I didn't realise the G's were still there (or there that recently).

Would be cool to see a B-52H with the "Iron Maiden Killers" paint scheme applied as nose art.
