Leon and Chris,

Thanks to the both of your in your efforts on this thread.

It's interesting that CH-19, BuNo129017 would end up at Aberdeen. The white color results from white being applied before the red-orange final coat. Here are photos from my site of 129017 being loaded aboard a Globemaster for its trip to NAS Argentia, Newfoundland in 1961.

http://hrs-helicopter.com/images/129017-129049/BuNo129017.2.jpg

It ended up with Orlando Helicopter Airways in Sanford, Florida and was last seen there in April 1984.

Took a picture of HUP-2 128516 last year at Leon's. Will be making the trip sometime this year to bring it home. Im itching to start working on her. The biggest pita will be to mate the tail back on. :) Planning to build an A-frame hoist. So that'll help.

Not listed on any Longshots, but I had written a Thomas Hopkins of Faison, North Carolina in regards to OH-58's he had up for sale. I requested photos and received 3 black & whites back. They show the remains of OH-58As serial # 71-20608 and 70-15594. Not much left and I didn't take him up on the sale, but looking up disposal sales east of the Mississippi River, 2 possibilities came up - the 7 May 1974 sale out of Fort Bragg, NC and the 21 Feb 1973 sale out of Fort Knox, KY. Mr. Hopkins took these photos on 11 Jan 1974 - my communications were made during December 1976 and his second letter to me he indicated partials will probably go to a Florida helicopter concern...

Dear Mr. Cleaver,
I am offering for sale the residue of two each crash wrecked OH-58A helicopters. They are U. S. Army Serial No. 70-15594 and 71-20608. They will never fly again and are offered for parts recovery only. No records, logs or data plates are available. Both are missing engine, T/R gear box, transmission, and main rotor hub. ... Would like to move these out before winter sets in.

"Ten Photos total. Nine photos dated 12-4-74, C-97G and RB-57A depicted while waiting for sale to start in near future. I have included pics of an H-19, HU-16 'Katanga', and RF-84 which were at the Saginaw Museum, but not listed in sales. The 11 Mar 1975 sale was cancelled and aircraft relisted on 8 Apr 1975 list. That sale shows winning bidders. The last photo of RB-57A was taken at Selma Airport, Muncie IN of 21463 on 4-20-1981. As I recall, it had been demiled somewhat, but doesn't seem so in photo."

These were all USAF aircraft that had been loaned to the short-lived Michigan Military Air Museum in the early 1970s. When the museum closed in 1974, the aircraft were impounded and sold; some would even fly again (I've corrected some serials).

This plane had been damaged by a windstorm and lost its rudder and so it was scrapped on the spot.

Good question. I found a topographical map that showed the location of the Selma airfield at 40.1880993, -85.2591355; the earliest aerial image (1994) shows a vague area that looks like it could have been a grass airstrip - but no RB-57. Today it's a plowed field.

Now the others that weren't part of the sale:

H-19 (UH-19D) 55-3186, no current info on this one:

Does anyone have any info on this H-19? Status? Present location?

That H-19 might still be out there...parked in a hangar or barn.

I'd love a display 19.
