I assume it's looked at the same way as people look at the word Confederate up in the North, which is non threatening or even thought of. I don't know anyone who is offended by the word or can't hear it, compared to some other words I know...

You assume wrong. While it's not as bad as it used to be, 'Yankee' is still not a very friendly word in parts of the Deep South.

And often has a four-letter "d" word in front of it.

So....what we KNOW is, Yankee is changing their name. Organizations rename or rebrand themselves to reflect a new direction or focus all the time..no big whoop.

But...in order to give his article a "hook" and stir up some controversy, the reporter cites an unnamed volunteer, who recalls overhearing an independent consultant use the dreaded term "politically incorrect," and suddenly (and predictably) it's "torches and pitchforks" time on WIX.

Oh well..enjoy your outrage. As for me, Big Bang Theory is on and my dinner's getting cold.

NEAM changed from the Bradley Air Museum back in 1980, right after the tornado almost wiped them out. They wanted to make it more "regional" sounding. I think they were correct, though we still get people thinking they are not the same entity and that the Bradley Air Museum was wiped out and gone, 35 YEARS LATER!!!
I have no problem with the "Yankee" but perhaps a re-branding might bring in more "southernly" sponsor dollars!
Go for it!
Jerry

^This right here.

We all know what makes the birds fly: funding. If you want people to give money to your cause, are they more likely to do so when the Payee line on their check is filled in with a serious/committed tone or one with a tongue-in-cheek tone? Are you more likely to give your money to the National Museum of WWII Aircraft? Or the Good Ole Boys Remember When Flying Club?

We all like the name, but we're the converted. Those here are likely already giving (in time, money or both) to whatever our local warbird entity is to keeping 'em flyin. But the small cadre of die hard warbird fans aren't enough to sustain it anymore, and groups like the CAF and YAM recognize this and are changing because the times demand it. If it takes a name change to fly the old iron, so be it.

But the frenzy of outrage of "PC"? You realize that was the reporter trying for a snappy headline, right?

I believe that's exactly what I said (though you phrased it a bit more concisely.)

My humble vote would be for "Willow Run Air Museum" (WRAM). It speaks to its history and location.

Cheers,

Tom Walsh.

Wasn't there a wix member that was blasting you in one of the TOM threads last year or the year before? The guy really had it out for the YAM. I wonder if the same person is causing this?

I know the word yankee has it's negative side, but when you look at the scope of history, & the oppression this nation has stopped, it has been more of a term of endearment to a nation that goes to the aid of any nation in need. I say keep it as it is.
