Logbook belonged to ACRM J W Adams of VP-44. He was a member of a PBY crew and was shot down and KIA in the battle of Midway, june 4 1942. The only PBY lost in that battle due to hostile fire.

The Military Aviation Museum in Va. Beach was honored to have Capt. Bert Ernest USN (ret) as a very special guest in June of '09. Capt. Ernest (along with then RM3 Harry Farrier USN ret) often referred to themselves as the "other" only survivors of Torpedo 8. (See Pic #24)

5 VT-8 crews were left behind at Pearl Harbor when the Hornet sailed for the Midway battle. Shortly after the Hornet sailed, those 5 crews flew the very first 5 Grumman Avengers from Pearl to Midway, where they attacked the Japanese fleet. Only one aircraft returned - the one piloted by then ENS. Albert Ernest. Ernest and Farrier were both wounded and survived, the gunner was KIA.

MAM had Mr. Bob Mrazek - author of "A Dawn Like Thunder" as a guest speaker. His book - which is a GREAT read - follows VT-8 through the whole series of events. Bob brought Capt. Ernest along when he came for his book signing and the flight of MAM's Avenger. It was a great day.
