I remember back in high school -so long ago- there was a rumor of local kids "from another school district" who were performing satanic rituals and were planning on kidnapping somebody from our school to use in their activities. It got everybody stirred up. The rumor floated around for weeks and there was talk at every bonfire, football game, and after-school event about "what-if's" in case this happened. Nothing ever happened.
The internet has become a superhighway of information. And since it is new, we are due for some spectacular super-crashes of misinformation a la HG Wells War of the Worlds Broadcast. If you think after reading that, "No way, we are too sophisticated," think again. Our media spent the last few weeks yellow-pressing North Korea, predicting a missile launch every few hours or minutes depending on what outlet you read. It would't take much for a match to get lit in a frayed-nerve environment and start a fire, war, or international incident based SOLELY on internet misinformation. Our politicians and media seem to be working hand-in-hand creating this type of emotional environment. There is a term for this. It is called AGIT-PROP or Agitation Propaganda.
It only works if you let yourself be deceived into believing that EVERYTHING written on the internet is true. You have to critically think about things you read and hear and not accept them just because your local news anchor, Rush Limbaugh, or a publicist told you. Don't forget that large media outlets have their own agenda, and despite claims, they are more interested in getting a jump on a competitor than getting the truth out to the public.
Dear God, if there were a "LIKE" button, I'd mash that flippin' thing so hard it would go back in time.
