I saw no protest at all, I will say that attendance was down, and that is was kind of a mellow air race year. But talking to the guys on the Strega crew this last week, they said that Bill has decided to call it quits on race 7 after this year. So I guess it was good for them to go out on top. One of the crew did say they were thinking of doing the airshow circuit with Strega but that was about it, said something to fact that they would put the stock wing back on it. Now lets see if that really happens, also lets hope for a much, much better show next year for the 50th.

Steve was a hard worker. Every time I passed the Strega pits he was working on the plane, then flying then working. It would be a shame to retire Strega. Basically you would have to call it the sea fury and a bearcat class. No offense to Miss A, she is a legend.

Per my previous posting, can anyone tell me who won last year, or was that year considered a non-race or some such? --Thanks if you can help...

Or was last year's race considered "cancelled" after Galloping Ghost crashed, so no winners declared?

Over on http://www.aafo.com - someone posted that they we're talking with Strega's crewchief and although RARA recognizes them as the winner last year - that they "team Strega" will not put that on the side of the airplane which is very commendable of them... If you go to the above website - go in the forums down to "11 wins" - that is where I read this... Team Strega only recognizes 10 wins...

Thanks for your response, Mike; appreciate it! While I sure understand the Strega crew's kind tribute logic, I'll still go by the RARA official awardings. After all, if Stega's crew doesn't want to include last year's champion award, wouldn't they also not want to include the 2010 award...the win awarded when the gold final wasn't run due to dangerous wind conditions?

I'm guessing that neither Tiger nor young Steve much likes having to claim a "win" in either of those fashions...after all, most competitors would rather settle things out on the race course. But in any sport, a points win, or a conditions win, or a judges win, etc. still are judged championship wins, just as if the racer actually crossed the finish line first. So as I'm updating my own personal Reno tracking for who and what plane won the gold, I'm calling it 4 wins for Steve Jr., 5 in a row for Strega, and 11 total wins for Strega...making that plane the winningest Reno racer in history!

Or am I out to lunch on this?

You might use their standards.
For total wins at all venues Rare Bear still has it along with an International recognized Speed Record.
Still hard to believe my Wife baby sat Steven way back when. Feelin old about now.

Kent Pietsch ready for his Unlimited qualifying run!!!
Well, from having seen him in action out here, we need to know if there a requirement to cross the finish line with all your control surfaces intact, and a penalty for landing on a moving vehicle rather than the runway?

Regards,

Oh, yeah, the Hinton chap. He dun good.

WHO is flying Kent Pietsch's Interstate Cadet...that is ...what Interstate Cadet after this description:

Kent had another Interstate that I believe he modified and repainted pretty quickly.
He REALLY likes them!

Seeing as this topic is wandering is would anyone be able to comment on why Precious Metal isn't as fast as it looks.
The plane is extensively modified (and on video and photo looks and sounds stunning) and qualified at 451.
Is it still being worked up or is the Griffin less highly tuned than the Merlins?

It's heavier.
Has greater surface area due to greater size on cowling ect.
Lacks oil cooler boil off which would reduce the size of the belly scoop and eliminate the oil door being wide open.
Lacks filler profiling of the wing with paint.
Full blown race Merlin produces more power at lighter weight.
Griffon does sound great though.

More of an airframe issue at that point than an engine issue. It is not a real P-51...it has a custom-designed and built fuselage that has a big question mark on both the design and the construction. It has never really been given the engineering and maintenance attention that any of the really fast Mustangs have been given over the years.

They gained a good 25 MPH just on having new, reprofiled props this year.
