If I remember correctly, before the war, Randolph Field was a BT school and Kelly Field was the AT-6 school.

I saw Gordon Stephenson taxi that AT-6 into the tail of another AT-6 airplane at the CAF show in 2006. Ouch.

Tony,

Indeed. Master brake cylinder failure. Pedals went to the floor. Shut off engine, but got a couple inches of the rudder. IIRC didn't even get our cowling. Was checked out by CAF Chief of Maint. among others who confirmed zero brakes. Irrelevant to topic. Sucks, but not a normal whoops.

By the way, Stephenson's AT-6 is in pre-WWII markings if I remember it correctly. Nice looking airplane.

Thanks. The stars aren't right though... That's why I try not to post photos on WIX. I need to get 'em repainted, first.

Looking for T-6 photo from 43 or 44 at Randolph or its satellite fields.
T-6C preferred but any ok from WWII.
Any other photos of action and activities at Randolph in that time appreciated as well.
Websites for organizations that could give these details would be great.

Rich, all I have found says Randolph was a primary training base and not an advanced base. There is a website that has records of training accidents and the list from Randolph is long but all reports are in PT's and BT's.

Lynn...............Dave Smith? Don't remember his T-6 paint job though. As mentioned here the only Randolph paint job I know of around here is Gordo Richardson. See it all the time, and it will be at our Fly-in at Hondo May19.

I've worked on this aircraft when I was in Galveston. I think that it was based at DW Hooks in Tomball for a while.

Hi Rich
As others have stated Randolph was a Basic Flying School but later it was a B-29 pilot transition school and this AT-6 was assigned to the 2532nd AAF Base Unit (Pilot School, Specialized, Very Heavy) or Hq, AAF Central Flying Training Command as a utility “hack”. The school’s assigned letter was an infix V in the school "buzz" number. Randolph was also for a while, the base of the Central Instructor School before it moved to Waco TX it had a variety of trainer types which might be more colorful than this AT-6.

Hope that is a help.
Tom
