i hope this isn't a morbid question and i don't want it to come off as one but were you able to walk around and see other famous veterans from all the wars?

There are headstones dating back to the civil war, especially near the Kennedy graves. There are even the infants of military personnel buried there, about 4 or 5 near my grand uncles spot. Every time I go there, I forget to go to Doolittle, Boyington and some of the other famous residents.

Interesting to note that the MoH for Ryan was for the Peacetime action of rescuing a civilian woman from a burning building. Today, that would net him the Sailor's Medal (Awarded for saving a life - normally in non-combat situations). Not detracting from the award. Just an observation.

The Navy had a history of awarding the Medal of Honor in peace time to rescuers especially divers and submariners. In the past there was not the plethora of awards there are today. I am not sure but think that some of the other awards were seen as strictly war time or combat awards but the MOH was not so if a sailor performed a heroic act in peace time the MOH was almost the only award that could be made.

The last time I was up there was a very cruddy day weatherwise, but that did not stop me from going for a very long walk through the grounds. Watched the changing of the guard at The Tomb of the Unknown, then proceeded to walk the grounds some more, behind that area. Only by chance did I come upon the marker of one of the more famous individuals there. Plain marker like so many others with a couple of other MOH recipients close by. Audie Murphy...a Soldiers Soldier. Paid my respects and continued on. A very surreal day.
