Hey y'all! Just wanted to give an update. We're still committed to repainting our L-5 when funds allow. Also, we had a good board meeting today at the Squadron and are hoping to do more work on our museum project. We also have some new ideas for our upcoming annual event which will be on April 14th.
With 6384 registered WIX users, if we could get 20% of the forum to contribute $5, we could get this thing repainted fairly soon!

The link is: http://www.indiegogo.com/Repaint-our-L-5

Thanks y'all!

Ryan

Going to get one or both of my brothers in San Antonio to get to your event this year. In honor of Tiny!

Best,

Smisek

Pending another paint scheme being well-documented, this is one of the schemes that interests me a lot. It helps that I've found four photos of it so far. Anyone have any more information on the unit? It's a Philippines bird.

Also, I'm still looking for L-5's on Guam, or sister ships of our bird. Of course, if we stay at the $350 mark I've got plenty of time to think about the repainting...

Wayne,

Most of that information is listed on the donation page! Haven't looked at it yet?

Hmmm. Maybe I should add a "squadron membership" option there on the donation page. Certainly, if WIXers come to town and I'm not busy with students, I'd be happy to try and arrange a flight. We do have insurance and pilot minimums as well as being a squadron member to be PIC. That said, our squadron's membership is really cheap considering. It's $200/yr as a pilot for the first year and $100/yr if you stick around for the next year. The squadron board (I'm one of 5 board members) would still have to approve you and there would be a checkout flight. Usually we do a flight in either the L-2 or J-3 first. There being no brakes in the back seat and a poor view make it a poor aircraft for dual.

It's definitely on the list, but since this one had 5 sister ships we know of in the Philippines, the first thought would be to put it in those markings, or of course, if we could find this one's wartime scheme.

I found out recently that there's a 163rd bird still around... wish I could snag that - or trade for it! It's paint scheme is likely about as authentic as ours, especially considering it's history.

I will say this, though. Since he's still with us right now, maybe, if we actually got enough funds in time, it would be worth it to go ahead and paint it in those markings, and change it later. Wouldn't be too hard actually.

OK Ryan so I read your web page, but still doesn't answer all the questions. What is it covered in, and does it have paint on it now (I hope not) or "dope". Expensive either way , but neccessary to know in approaching your "re-model" hopes.

I've been told... that the guys at the CAF went to the paint store and got tan and brown spray paint... partly for the "Desert Storm" camo scheme, but partly also to be able to go to the store and slap on some paint if it needed it. Again, I wasn't there, but that's what I was told. I'm pretty sure it's not dope, though I might be wrong. It may be that we can sand the current scheme down and re-paint it, but it may need a re-cover in order to be done properly. The plane is in a covered, but not enclosed hangar, so sooner or later we'll have to do this. It is still meeting the "punch" tests. We're thinking about going to a couple of corporations, but I'd rather not do that, personally.

Ooouch, paint ain't no good for fabric airplanes (especially Krylon overhaul). Don't let our friendly helpers find out about it. If it's dope I have a few gallons of rejuvinator I could part with.

What costs are we looking at for a repaint? We have several events with LD Todd and can ask for donations.

Honestly, to do a proper job, we're looking at $5-10K depending on how much volunteer elbow grease goes into it.
