This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Well now we have these great colections for our museum but what are we going to do with it and where would it be? For me that is in one of two places, an old retiered SAC Base in Maine

Or more people freindly some land in South Jersey that people can get to.
I also need to add a Fw 190 to mix it up with my fighters
Observation, skip it and get a bf 109D, or if I must A Ju 88 can work
The chopper a Jolly Green Giant!!
Warhawk, question: do you know of any referances to a two seat P-40? I was reading a wesite that mentioned a restored warbird P-40N two seat

Las-Vegas, that way when the flying day is over, we could something besides freezing
I've had an idea for awhile, and I wonder if anyone can clue me in on the possibility of this....
I've rode in the Collings foundation B-17 and B24. The only non-awesome thing I can say about it it, the guns are locked down. That led me to think that it would be cool if the guns were air/nitrogen loaded to cycle the bolt, and made some loud noise. You could put little cameras on the guns to record the fight. You get some of the ToraToraTora Zeros to make runs at the bomber. Put miles gear and laser beams on the bomber and its guns and on the zeros, that way when you get a positive hit, the smoke starts pouring out for ten seconds, kind of like those dogfight outfits in san diego do. Put a backseat rider in the zero also. Have everyone on the intercomm too, to call out targets. Use a B-25 to start out with, If it does good, use a bigger bomber. When its all done, everyone gets a video and a tshirt to commemerate the best bomber or zero ride yet. I'd pay a lot to do that.

I did a little surfing around the net and what I came up with is a bit confusing. Fantasy of Flight claims to have the only TP 40N, period. However Eden Prarie Planes of Fame website claims that they also have a TP 40N sn 44-7084. PoF claims 30 were modified while FoF claims 40. Beyond what I could find through google, I can't say as I don't have those types of research materiels available to me. Maybe someone else can come up with some firmer figures than I.

I think that Bob pond's machine may have been converted at a depot, while Kermit Weeks' machine was made that way at the factory. But then again, maybe I'm wrong...

The PoF site specificlly states that 44-7084 was converted by Curtiss at Buffalo NY. That would be the source of my confusion as it was a bit late for me and I was tired when I was looking things up last night.

Maybe the question now is if one aircraft was converted prior to delivery, and one after delivery- assuming there was any difference at all. Also, Bob Pond's aircraft does not presently have the TP-40 canopies, so it doesn't look like a TP-40 from the outside- although I can vouch for the dual controls as I did a takeoff and flew around for about 20 minutes from the back some years ago. Quite an exciting event for an accomplished Luscombe pilot at the time.

Thanks all the the P-40 help!
I will agree a more central location for our little project, but that brings in the fear of tonados, so I would have it ouside of St. Louis lots of space we could have differnt areas for countrys or Theatures. Also close to major city and travel would be good.
O.P. I had a dreem about using MILES gear on mock dog fights. I think that it would be great and help to understand th planes, but i am not shure I would want to puch my 60+ year old radial engine to war power and try to out turn the A6M Zero with my P-40
But the use of two seat fighters would be great. In the same dream I was in a spit trying to get a bf 109, I was not doing well. Safe to say this last week has been a very good one for dreams and flying!!

Wow! Where you gonna get that radial engined P-40!?
St Louis seems to be the ideal place - Central location, near existing tourist destinations (Arch, Branson, Pro Sports), and nice flying terrain. I was going to push for Gnashville, TN, but the weather around here has been getting progressively woolier every year... too many tornadoes.

The SAC base in Maine has been commandeered by the Snowball Militia for SECRET AND CLANDESTINE MISSIONS. As for the C-5, We are using an early A model as a mobile command post, flying pet clinic and House of Ill Repute(see the Colonel on that one)!

Yeah, that Arch really attracts the tourists from around the world!
Of course, who would want to come to southern California where the weather is usually good, corrosion is light, it isn't too cold or too hot/humid, and the warbird density is high. By the way, in the winter here in SoCal you can go skiing in the morning and hang out at the beach in the afternoon. Or drive to Vegas in a few hours, or go to Disneyland, or go to Chino...

Did I slip on the P-40 engine

Yes I looked it back up sorry I should have said inline V-1710 model. Please I hope you all do not find me any less of a person.
As for sothern California, Earthquakes, make for expansive construction, fires, riots, and I like four seasons and in St. Louis I can get a little snow. True flying over the vegas strip or running tours in a classic bird would be nice I still would pick the middle of the country. WE are slose to a lot and could have rides out west or East say in a DC-4!

I get it now, That's what you get fro dropping $400 for a ride
Mon Jun 14, 2004 12:51 pm
How was the flight? Did you get to move around to the different positions?
As for the North North Airlines, no but think of painting it up like the North Woods in the Fall. We could fly leaf watching trips
But I think it would be a hard sell because who but the really diehard would want to see my aircraft in Northern Maine. But as a summer/Fall base as an alternative or special trip location, it has prommis

Interesting question!
Wonder what answer today, 4 years later??
