Steve, you are very right about Bradleys book on the Fillipino treatment by the U S. I never even knew about that, don't think it is publisized in U S schools, and surely not these days.
I wanted something to read on a trip, so just bought a paperback the looked interesting, it was THE IMPERIAL CRUISE, by James Bradley, whose Father John was one of the flag raisers. It was about Roosevelt's daughter with Sec. Taft( later Pres Taft going to the Fillipines, etc. I was shocked by the cruelty and barbaric behavior of the Americans as I had never read anything like it. Then I realized that it was Teddy, not FDR.
Many have debated whether waterboarding is torture or not, or if it is; is it ok if we only torture the worst terrorist? The book not only tells of U S troops torturing Fillipinos that way, but even shows photos of it, taken by the Americans themselves. They didn't even seem to have any shame about it, or any concern that the public might find out and be outraged. I guess the Fillipinos were not really regarded as fully people. The American general even issued an order that simply said to kill all males over 12 years old, no, if, ands, or buts, on the idea that they might become armed against the Americans.
The Japanese used waterboarding on prisoners in WWII, and we accused them of it as part of the war crimes trials after their surrender.
I was going to use this book as light reading before bedtime, but haven't finished it, had some bad dreams after reading part of it.
