This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Yes, the DOD is currently working on that problem as we speak. Dad is working for a company that has one of those contracts to help identify old target ranges for clean up. There are many stories about stuff being found in south fla all the time.
Years ago digging at Ft. Lauderdale Airport they hit a object!!!, the dir of ops got a call (MY DAD) with a urgent message so he ran over. "Naw, not to worry" he said. "I'ts a dud"

Mr. BDK is correct,The numerous explosives,Both U.S. and Japanese were all shipped without fuses installed. It does not take a scientist nor mentally impaired person to figure out why this is .No fuse ,no boom,no exception. However, much of this large ordinance is surrounded by smaller caliber ammo that is pre-fused and ready to rock.If a pile of torpedo's or mines or similar is surrounded by piles of small arm rounds or maybe 20 mm or similar ammo and they somehow go off ,then yes its possible.Otherwise, the big stuff is and and has always been no threat

Isn't there a sunken Liberty ship full of ammunition in the Thames downstream of London that nobody wants to touch?

The really scary part of this whole post is the " Big Blowfish farts" that Mr. tom Friedman talks about.I wont ever be able to snorkel on some remote reef ever again. I haven't had a good nights sleep since reading this.I just hope these farts are not "SBD's" (silent but deadly)

I'd be more concerned about the Soviet K-129 laying in 16,000 feet of the Pacific NW of Hawai`i with three nuke ICBMs half spilled out of their tubes and whether or not they might go off as opposed to leaking radiation into the Ocean, tough choice, rain that glows in the dark or 5 eyed fish that cook themselves.

Dear Mr.Inspector,
in my opinion both glowing rain and self cooking 5 eyed fish are very, very bad! now I'll never get any more sleep! thanks!

camp perry which was a u.s. army base since ww 1 is now an ohio national guard base. it is located in port clinton ohio on lake erie. it has been a gunnery firing range for decades & is a restricted area for boaters & fishermen. there are countless unexploded shells in the lake, & they can be seen when a strong nor easter wind hits & pushes the water out toward canada. you can literally walk out & see the shells in the silt under these weather conditions.

Mr.Friedman,
my advice to you is to not go swimming anywhere close to these very bad items.and if your lure or fish on the line get stuck on the bottom or in brush, cut the line and get very very far away asap. and never, ever drop anchor there! ever!
