The thread about the Fire Bomber Tankers in action in Colorado gave me an idea:

Since there apparently are no currently flying P-2/P2V Neptunes in stock warbird configuration with vintage U.S. Navy markings (such as the MAAM SP-2H/P2V-7 that has not flown for several years), maybe one or more of the working Tanker Neptunes could be brought to Michigan. Even one of the Tanker P-3 Orions would be nice also.

Just a thought.......

That is a very cool idea. I'd love to see a P2V fly even if it is not in Navy colors.

Over on Air Show Buzz, Michael Luther has announced that the "theme" aircraft for TOM 2011 will be the F/A-18 Hornet. This may not necessarily be what many WIX members or vintage warbird fans want to hear, but with the Blue Angels bringing at least 7 to 8 Hornets to the show and with likely Super Hornet and/or Hornet demos, etc. there was likely to be at least 10 to 12 Hornet/Super Hornets at the show without any kind of additional gathering. So as the likely most numerous naval aircraft type at the show next year, it makes sense for it to be a theme aircraft. Also, I believe the C-130 Hercules was a "theme" aircraft a couple of years or so back, so it wouldn't be the first time a currently serving type had theme status at Thunder Over Michigan.

I don't have a problem with it as long as it does not detract from or restrict the numbers of civilian owned vintage naval warbirds that may come to the show.

Agreed. If that's what they need to get the crowds to come out and make money, I'm all for it. I haven't seen the Super Hornet Demo in five years. Just as long as there are plenty of radial engines and vintage jets to go around, I'll be ok with it. Shoot, I barely noticed the C-130s last time even though it was the "theme" aircraft because there was so much more to look at.

I happen to know where the only authentic flying representation of the Navy U-11A airframe is, and it's reasonably priced to get to shows too!

I thought it sounded familiar, but I had to pull out my copy of the 3rd edition of "United States Navy Aircraft Since 1911" (Putnam Aeronautical Books and Naval Institute Press, 1990) and look it up.

If the Piper UO-1/U-11A Aztec is in authentic U.S. Navy markings, then it would be a perfect addition to TOM next year.
