Early LB-30s have the short nose of the B-24A. The RAF named them Liberator. Liberator IIs have the longer nose like a D with somewhat different armament than a D. These also still had the round engine nacelles and cowlings. The Air Corps then had the B-24C that set the stage for the D and all later versions of the bomber variant.

The conversion of AM927 to a transport configuration begat the C-87 series. The RY-3 is a cargo variant of the PB4Y-2 Privateer etc. etc.

More later?

I hope so, it is important to me to understand this particular airplane. According to my scant and feeble knowledge, AM927 was never delivered overseas due to a training accident, that the plane was repaired instead of being scrapped (as it most likely would've been shortly later on in the war), and since was practically obsolete upon completion of said repair work was retained by Consolidated Aircraft to serve as a combo company hack and flying test bed for mods, new gadjets, etc. And that the C-87 conversion was the first of the mods to be wrung out. Am I following correctly so far?

Dang, it's no wonder so few people ever got Diamond Lil's ID right, or knew what the heck they were talking about when they tried to explain. I know -- I was one of 'em for more years than I care to think about. :?

Based on that criteria alone, it could have been a McKinnon Goose!

A riveting novel could be written about the exploits of these guys. Nevertheless, it's not something that can be summarized in a forum post!

I'd really love to be able to nail down just what exactly happened to it.

Best of luck with that -- they're not very forthcoming with information about any of their dealings in aircraft, race cars, real estate, etc. I witnessed my brother go up to one of them at Reno one year while seeking an autograph on a photo. He said, "excuse me, Mr Whittington..." The response: "He's not here".

And THAT, my friends, is one of my favorite Reno memories. Just gets funnier with age. I remember Hacker and I looking at each other with this "Are you KIDDING ME?" look and then just busting out laughing as Don walked away.

A few years back those LB-30's were for sale - can't remember who but when we (wendover museum) called on them they wanted quite a bit of $$ - they did have a good replacement Davis wing they would throw into the deal but even at that it still seemed very unrealistic at the time. . . .

The entire family feature heavily on Wikipedia...

Already read all of it - none of it was helpful in explaining what happened to N150M
