Diplomatic Row as B-29 Buzzes Hiroshima On the Anniversary of the Atomic Bombing

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senior US State Department diplomats today are scrambling to provide answers to a Japanese Government "gravely offended" that a WWII-era Boeing B-29 Superfortress overflew Hiroshima on the anniversary of the atomic bombing of that city. "Col." Jethro E Culpepper, spokesman and alleged "Commander" for the Commemorative Air Force, which owns the restored 4-engined bomber of the type that conducted the bombing on Aug 6, 1945, indicated that the overflight was due to an "inadvertent navigational error" on the part of a flight-crew inexperienced with the operation of the aircraft, which has been grounded for a number of years. However, in a scene reminiscent of the New York City fly-over by Air Force One in the early days of the Obama Administration, residents of Hiroshima ...
