This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

I really enjoy M*A*S*H. I think that there were some episodes I could have done without, but overall, it was a legendary show. If the doctors in the show seemed anti-war that may be because many of the real docs were. Remember these were doctors, many of which were drafted. From an interview I did with a M*A*S*H surgeon, "We were not soldiers, we were not army. We were civilian docotrs dressed in green. Everything from our uniforms to regulations at M*A*S*H units were pretty informal." 75% of all the storylines for MASH came from actual veterans interviews. Some of the veteran iinterviews turned up things so wild that they couldn't use them in the show because no one would believe them. I also like the stuff that was just funny. Henry Blake saluting and alwas getting his hand stuck in his fishing gear on his hat, The early episodes when Hawkeye and Trapper were at their worst, and Frank Burns and Hot Lips were on. But with the changes, I am glad that they didn't try and make it the same type of person, but instead a whole new character. I like Harry Morgan as Col. Potter, not a huge Charles fan, but he had some good moments, and I really enjoyed the friendship between Hawkeye and BJ. Radar was a hoot too.

Alda was a gifted comic actor. I got to see him on Broadway, in an unrelated role but basically still playing himself/Hawkeye. His acting range was essentially zero but he had one schtick and did it well. He did like peace (boo, hiss) but was a smart and funny guy, on camera or off.
The show itself jumped the shark when the cast got unrealistically old and the barriers between Hawkeye and Margaret started to come down. At the beginning of this thread I thought there was nothing I could care to see less than the original set dressing, but I was wrong -- a replica of the original set dressing would qualify.

I lost respect for it after Henry was killed and Radar became such a wussie.
I loved it when Radar was mailing home the jeep part by part. In the book and original movie he was quite a different figure.
Still it was a great show.

I enjoyed it..but I'll agree that towads the end, it got a bit full of itself...especially Alan Alda when he started to believe his own press, and the very late 20th century ideas espoused by the B.J. character...
Her's an example: In an early episode they take out the appendix of a "gung ho" officer because his attacks were causing too many casualties. Trapper John's idea is to sideline hin fore awhile...so they do.
Several years later, thery have the same script, only now B.J. questions the ethics of "desecrating" (I think that was the term he used) human body by an unnecessary operation.
No doubt in it's original form in the book of film, the doctors would never of had such a discussion. Towards the end of the series, you expect Phil Donahue to pop out from under a sheet and order a group hug.
Aside from that, I always give the producers credit for usually using not only the correct type of helicopters (H-13s) but the correct model...the H-13D/E (one-piece fuel tank, cabin entrance without the hump, no tail stabilizer) and correct litters & fairings.
Occasionally, you'd see a later Bell 47G (two piece fuel tanks) and once even a 47J Ranger (4 seat with an enclosed tailboom).
When I was flying a H-13D at Zemlock's out of Chino, he said friends flew for the series.

There is history in the replica set dressing. Remember that it is being done to celebrate the show, but the show set was built to match a map of Doctor Apel, a real M*A*S*H docto who lived in a tent named the Swamp.

Just FYI, these rumors have persisted for over two years now and so far that is all they are. I have been there and photographed the site often. As far as I know they bring a sign out on weekends only. I think it is just wishful thinking. It might be helpful if mustangdriver can site his source for this information.
Check out these websites. I think if it were true they would know about it.

This isn't the article I had, but it is close to what I read. This is from the LA times.

How did you deduce that the MASH set would be rebuilt and turned into a tourist destination?
Sun Feb 07, 2010 4:37 pm
The site already is a tourist destination. According to one of the tour guides there most of the people that go there are looking to see the MASH sites. I don't have the link anymore to the original article I read becaue that was on my old work e-mail. I thought that talking about this might bring up some info about how far along they are.

Well keep up the good work. I know you wouldn’t make such a statement without being able to source it. I trust you! Somebody might get the wrong impression that you are making things up. Keep us informed!
All the best,

WTF?

Just wondering Dan since you are obviously more in the know and closer to this project, if I'm just making it up how did you hear the rumors two years ago as you stated in your first post. Do I have all the details, no. I just remembered this while reading the hogans hero thread. I found the links I found. To accuse someone of making stuff up simply because they are trying to put together what is going on with a project is pretty rude in my opinion. I have no beef with you but for some reason you have one with me.
