Except, as August's said, it's a photo by Charles E Brown, whose collection is owned by the RAF Museum. Despite the assumption of someone that it's an 'official' photo, it's not.

Never completely trust WIKI! They will get you every time! :oops: The "Orphaned Works" bill that was in the works was an attempt to make it easier here in the US to use OLD historical photos IF no owner was know, but it was set up so loose that it set up a great howl of protest as it made the taking and using images too easy with very little compensation to owners of those works if found. It is a very sticky subject. Even if you buy a set of unknown old photos, the right to USING them is still quite nebulous!

So has anyone here used the Charles Brown photos before and thus know what sort of fee the RAF Museum would charge, around abouts?

ie is the usage fee minimal or ginormous?

Yes, but many years ago and for print.

They'd say it's reasonable, I think it's too much. Negotiation with such institutions is possible, particularly if you can push the not-for-profit aspect or educational/academic angle.
