That must have been one of the last Viggie cruises. The Indy CV-62 carried Heavy 12 as part of CAG-7 in '77. By '79 we had switched to CAG-8 and carried a Detachment from VFP-67 (RF-8G). Both RA-5C's and RF-8G's were gone by '83 when we took the Vinson CVN-70 around the world, then we had CAG-15 and VF-111 had TARPS on their F-14A's.

The Viggie had the same engine (J79) as the Phatoms but carried a 5 stage Afterburner where the F-4's used a 3 stage AB. You could lay in your bunk and tell if it was a Phatom or a Viggie on the Cat.

Holedigger,
Noisy, hell yes. Hot, nope, first the flightdeck is thick as hell and once they went to AB, they didn't stick around long.

Jack,
Did not include the Whales, as they were like noisy neighbors. You never knew when they would show up, take up a lot of room, scare everyone to death, borrow what they didn't have and were generally a pain in the seat.

My step-dad loved them and flew with them at every oppturnity.
Of course he started back in the 60s with Heavy 4.

Growing up in Columbus Ohio during the 1960's was great! Vigis used to buzz my house in Reynoldsburg and half the neighborhood worked for North American.

Now the North American plant is a processing center for government payments....progress? :(
