When the POF first announced that they were going to restore P.L., they said it would cost something like 1 to 1.5 Million USD to restore back to airworthy condition. That was also nearly 10 years ago at 90's dollar values. It wouldn't surprise me if the total restoration of that costs in excess of 2 Million USD at today's rates. The reason, as I understand it, that they haven't done more with it and it's still sitting outside, is directly attributable to funding. The POF simply doesn't have the money to either put it inside or start the restoration in earnest.

A while back when this project was first announced, some major cable company, like The History Channel, or National Geographic, Discovery, etc., were all set to partially fund, film, and document the entire restoration process from beginning to end. What happened to that? I assume that deal fell apart. Anyone care to elaborate - Cindy, Brandon?

Never heard that, but that does not mean it isn't/wasn't true. There may be a lot of folks willing to donate waiting for something substantial to get started first. Maybe we can be that pump priming influence?

I first read about it on the POF website back in the late 90's. I believe that Cindy was running the website back then, so perhaps she can pipe in here. I think, I also read about it in Air Classics, IIRC, at the time. If it wasn't true, it was a very hot and heavy rumor which was very prevalent at that time and was making the rounds.

I have it on good authority that this never happened.

I've discussed this with POF management and Scott.

POF has no way to track what B-17 donations come from WIX members at this time. There is a separate account for the B-17 though, so this money is segregated from other museum funds.

Scott says that it was a monumental hassle to collect and distribute payments for the CAF B-24 project (PayPal issues I would guess), so I don't think we should burden him with that.

What I suggest is that we send our donations directly to Planes of Fame and use the honor system to report on this thread that we have made our donation. Make sure you specify clearly that the donation is for the B-17 fund.

Don't forget that it is a great idea to become a member as well!
