I believe that the F-101 and F-105 came from the CALS at Camp Bullis. I was there in 1999 or 2000 and there were 3 F-101s and 3 F-105s sitting in the weeds beside the Combat Assault Landing Strip.

I will have to dig out my pics and check serial numbers, but I would bet dollars to donuts that is where they came from.

No record of the -101 on Joe Baugher's site, but it should be 59-0423, an F-101B ADC type (2 seater), not an RF-101 (single seater). It also has a radome, and not a photo-recce nose.

Based on the tail numbers, the Thud appears to be 57-5789, an F-105B

Where they came from

The F-101B last served with the 136FIS, NY ANG, out of Niagara Fallas, until its retirement, then was transferred to Kelly AFB as a ground instruction airframe.

The F-105B last served with the 141TFS, NJ ANG, McGuire AFB. It did not serve in SEA. It was one of the first block of -105 production airframes, and as far as I can tell never left the States. it is from the same block that the Thunderbird F-105s were from, though this was not one of theirs.

Sad to see them in this condition, but at least they still do exist.

There are a bunch of old fighters scattered around the country, the military used to let them go to just about anyone. Too bad most of them are in very poor shape.

Thanks for the pictures Gary. So you were able to drive right up to them without any problems?

Hope that they can find a home and get some TLC soon! I think the Texas Air Museum in Slaton already has a Voodoo and a Thud in their collection? Speaking of which, I need to get up there sometime soon and check that place out...

I'll have to visit them myself next trip out to west Texas.

Nothing much, Steve. Just an ultralight and a Harley.

Yup, that's where they told me they came from. So you're right on the money! :-)

I'm working a little deal with them now, to try to improve at least one of the airplanes, but nothing's in stone yet, so I don't want to jinx it by mentioning too much here. ;-)

Old images from google earth of Camp Bullis indicate six planes (three and three) there at one time.

Isn't this a T-stick II Bird?

Thu May 14, 2009 4:14 pm

F-105B-15-RE 57-0789 more than likely not a Vietnam vet, which for a Thud is much more rare than being one! Will do my best to see this lady on my was home in about a month.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the T-STICK II had the ridgeback along the spine, as this aircreaft does not. I also recall that the only unit to fly the T-STICK II in AFRES was the 301st TFW, 457th TFS, out of Carswell AirForce Base in Fort. Worth, TX. Hope this clears the confusion.

Does the F-105 still have its engine mounts intact, or were they de-milled? And where are the others from Camp Bullis?
