Thoughts and prayers for the family. Closure is good, the grief and pain is still there, but now the uncertainty of not knowing is put to rest.

Bittersweet news to be sure, but at least the uncertainty is finally over.

I'm glad he is home. Wish it was a happier ending but he his home and the family can have some peace now.

That is a noble and understandable sentiment but I know history and the fact is that there will be other "Speicher Incidents". It is inevitable whenever we go to war. Efforts should be made to recover anyone lost but there have been and will be circumstances when that will be unlikely or impossible and the hard choice of abandoning a soldier, sailor, airman to his fate will have to be made. Should the Navy have spent all its CSAR assetts to find one pilot while there were Marines getting wounded on the ground? Did Speicher deserve more attention because he was a pilot? Imagine if someday we end up again in a situation similar to Bataan in 1942 or the Korean Penninsular in 1950. Leaving men behind will be inevitable because it will mean saving other men.

There are still remains from the Civil War turning up during construction projects, WW1 remains are still found in France and of course WW2 remains can still be found on virtually every continent. I personally would love to see the remains of Jesse Brown recovered from Korea and it might just happen if that regime can collapse without starting a nuclear war. But the fact is not everyone gets to come home.

I think it is great that Speicher's remains have been found and all speculation can be laid to rest and his family can have closure.

>>1. We need to learn from this and never just leave a guy behind.
There needs to never be another "Speicher Incident".<<

Dupre,
SPIKE got left early on because some folks didn't have the balls
to send SAR in. I got to ask ADM Stan Arthur about this two years
ago. He was non-commital. I have spoken with guys who WANTED
to go look but were denied.

Subsequently, the US did a LOT of investigation, ran down MANY
leads, and finally found the truth. My thanks to JPAC and all those
involved in securing closure.

I have heard from the family and they are resolute that they
"will get through this" We should all support them at this time.

GOD Bless Scott & RIP,

Owen

I have to say I'm glad he wasn't captured and tortured and lord knows what else.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Rest In Peace, Scott.

Finally some closure for the family.

Will the Navy try to determine how he died? Did he go in with the plane? Did he eject and not survive?
