This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Since the AF does not want this it will take an act of Congress to get them.
Hopefully their local congressman is pro-military, pro-aviation, and pro-history.
Good luck to them!I don't know much about the outfit, but they're becoming the CAF of the 21st Century....that's meant as a compliment.

Interesting that the top ABDR F-105, F-105F 63-8307, only saw two months (Dec 72 - Jan 73) overseas action at Korat AB with the 561st Tactical Fighter Squadron. It served most of it's life at McConnell AFB, Nellis AFB, Eglin AFB and George AFB.

The F-105s at Lackland security training area were/are 61-0106, 61-0108, 61-0115, 61.0199, 62-4228, 62-4259, 62-4279, 62-4346, and 62-4353. They were first noted there in 1983, shortly after the type was retired by the 466TFS at HIll AFB.
Prior to their arrival, there were other aircraft in that area. I photographed F-102A 56-1151, F-101B 58-0290 (ex-111FIS), and a RF-84 there in late 1983. The F-102 was sent to Robins AFB for display, the F-101 is still preserved elsewhere on the base.
It would not surprise me if, after the current budget crunch, the F-105s are dragged off. There are a number of old F-16As and Bs stored at Lackland, ex-Sheppard AFB ground trainers. Would seem to make sense to have those on that line - at least it would look more like a modern AF ramp for the trainees. Will some of the Thuds be saved? If they belong to the AF Museum, maybe. If they belong to AETC (as active duty training aids), then they are probably doomed to the scrapper's torch.

There is all ready a new mock flightline with F-16s across the street at Medina that is currently in use. The 105 flightline hasn't been used by the SF school for several years so far.

There are some other WIXers who know the details about the Thuds, who controls 'em, and what that person wants to happen to them.

Very interesting about those 105's.......did anyone else notice that when you zoom in one disappears?
on bing maps, the picture above 100ft resolution shows 10 105's........wonder where it went? I looked around a bit and didn't see it in the base collection.
about the Brooks planes.....did they cut up the F-101 in the background as well?

Dang...just missed the 105s being there at Lackland...went through the SP Academy towards the end of 1981. Was curious if anybody has any pix from out at Camp Bullis? Did some security training out there while enjoying some quality time with the fire ants

I can remember an aircraft parkng area out in the woods there with something like T-34s or some such planes parked there. Would be great to see some pix if anyone has any to share...I unfortunately was busy with other things to get any pix. Thanks in advance.

Everything at Bullis were removed in the early 90s as they were an enviromental danger to the resident fire ants and cedar trees, not to mention the blind salamanders.

I lived right across the street from those Lackland 105's for about 2 months in 2005! Always hoped they'd get some good treatment some day!

I think my post about the second F-105 saved from the flightline was lost. The Museum of Aviation in Georgia is now the proud home of 62-4259 Cajun Queen. She was #2 in the line. She was delivered to the museum by C-5 in April.
