Playground Jets

From what I am told there is a playground in Wall Township NJ (i think) that is called "jet playground" or something like that. No one seems to remember the type but the sign for the playground shows an Panther I believe......

Wall Township might be a good clue. Dad used to fly out of the Asbury Park Airport back in the day and was also quite the race fan at Wall Stadium.

I was at the Intrepid a few months ago and peeked under the tent. The Cougar was one I know quite well and helped me get started into Warbirds. It was located in Wall Township NJ at what is still called the Airplane Park. We used to play in and on it while I was growing up.

It was removed when I was in college as it was becoming run down and there were sharp corners and wires that I guess were a liability. I know a paint scheme was chosen when the restoration is completed as there is a picture of what it will look like in the tent next to the aircraft.

My dad remembers a F-86 covered with concrete in a park in Covina, is this the one you were talking about or do u know what happened to it?

Someplace in Northern NY is a F9F in a play ground!

Check Mike Henniger's locator database. He has a lot of these already pointed out. I know there is an F9F and an F-86 in the Los Angeles area-both covered in a layer of Gunite (concrete).

I grew up playing on a T-33 filled with cement near San Jose CA. The park was in Los Gatos. If jdvoss, sees this maybe he can stop by and take a few shots, as it's in his neck of the woods. I'd love to see it again, if it's still there.

The Wall Township one was in Monmouth County, about 30 minutes east north east of that point. There were some down there too, I think an F4

I logged many hours in the F-86D at Palmview Park in West Covina growing up in the 60's. I used to crawl through the fuselage from intake to tail until I got too big. The skin was very smooth from everybody playing on it. I used to get some good burns from the hot skin in the summer. There were plenty of sharp edges and places to get snagged.
I think they gunited it in the early 70's as a way of idiot proofing it.

Veratile......The F9F that used to be at Swope Park Zoo, in KC, Mo.....what year was it there, and around what time did it leave??

There used to be one (F9F) at Down Town airport..ex-Municipal Airport , in a small observation area on the west side of the field....maybe the same aircraft??? I know it was there from at least 1967 until 1972...I found what was left of it in a small salvage yard off the southeast side of the airport...old Harlem...small shards of Navy blue aluminum, and some pieces of the instrument panel.....Thank goodness, we got rid of another eyesore piece of junk!

The TV-1 lay on it's belly in the base play yard @ NAS Sandpoint WA. in the late 50's/early 60's. The MoF aquired it sometime in the latish 60's and sent it to Yakima WA. for restoration. THe guy doing the work on it was involved in a meatgrinder car accident and after sitting for some time. it was drug back across the Cascades and now rests in the MoF restoration facility @ KPAE. The airplane is very significant because it was one of a tiny handful of F-80's given to the Navy by the USAF so Unka Sams Canoe Club could learn jets, maybe some day..............
The kid in the B-17 Tee shirt is 262crew and the cute young lady next to him is his older sister. In the background is Ben Halls P-86 (s/n 6) that now is in England. I think this was 1985 during the B-17 50th anniversary fly-in @ MoF.

The MoF Restoration Facility also is nearing completion on an FM-2 to replace the MARTLET in the Vulcan dark and poorly lit basement of significant aircraft (formerly the Champlin Collection) which is for/has already been sold. That airframe I used to play on as a kid when it was in a playground in White Center WA. a suburb community South of Seattle, my cubicle partner @ work is assisting in the restoration process, currently trying to learn the Engish Wheel without smashing a finger to make the cowl side panels.

Yes. But Tom has major issues with the wing skins they are a composite of balsa and aluminum.

There were two that were located in Montgomery County, Maryland, up until the late 1970s.

F7U Cutlass -- this was located in Wheaton Regional Park in Wheaton, Maryland

FJ Fury -- this was located in Cabin John Regional Park in Bethesda/Potomac, Maryland

Both were removed from the playgrounds and subsequently scrapped. When I've talked to some of the long time staffers of the Park and Planning Commission, they tell me they get a surprising amount of inquiries regarding the planes from adults that played on them as children.

I was the one that mentioned the Airplane Park Cougar in Wall Township. I heard she came from Earle Naval Weapons Station at some point. I can remember she was pretty gutted but there were still many wires and edges so I left plenty of blood there over the years.

All that is left is a sign and with all of the new people in town many have no idea how the park got its name. With the Intrepid just back after its restoration I want to see how the F9F is making out.
