I have read many books on fighter pilots and most have mixed it up with other Allied fighters in a playful dogfight in a quest to see if they were or are better pilots.
I know the 8th Air Force in England had training groups that did the mock dogfighting .
Like the saying goes Practice makes perfect.
So I'm sure your father did the same with those Spitfires in a quest to see what he and the Hellcat can do against a more maneuverable plane.
This playfulness can be tragic some times as in a story I read were a pilot would like to fly under his squadron mates with them not knowing he is there and pull up in front of them going straight up scaring that pilot who is just flying along.
Last time he did this he miss jugded his pull up and lost the tail of his fighter and yes like I said that was his last time.
Hope this is what your looking for.
Rick

James if I was the only one who had a problem with the way you treat people here, then yes I would agree with you that I need therapy or electroshock treatment or something, but unfortunately for you I'm not. Back off you high horse a bit James and we'll all get along just fine. You're not the only scholar here who has ALL the answers. And your "hockey" analogy needs some work, but who really cares right? I'm a pretty smart guy too James.

As for dad, I'll figure things out soon enough. Thanks again all for the great advice, I'm beginning to figure out that dad wasn't a b*llsh*tter after all ....

Mark, I'm not usually one to get involved in the multitudinous arguments on this forum, but with all due respect I think you're the one who needs to "back off" with regards to your remarks directed at James. In his first post in reply to your thread he offered nothing but good sound advice in an attempt to assist your research, which is what we all thought you wanted. He was trying to help and all you've done is insulted him in return, and I find your rebuttles most puzzling. I can't see any reason why you've gotten so upset with him. Sure, James has his own style of writing but at least it is clear and concise and helpful and I have no problem with it at all, and I think you might need to reconsider the advice he has offered because it is pretty good. I have done a lot of research into individual airmen's careers and the service records and logbooks are the best starting point you can have for such research.

Dave, I'm not upset with James, just a little annoyed. I encourage the advice from James and all the rest here, but I certainly don't need to be lectured and belittled. James and I have had our share of run-ins in the past and quite honestly, I'm doing my part to keep the peace with him, as well with others. I'm learning to back off as well, but yes, I still get annoyed at times. No big deal. Enough said on the subject. Let's move on.

I'd like to research my dad's career and again I greatly appreciate all the advice, that's why I'm here. To learn and contribute whatever I have to offer that would be appreciated by all of you. If I'm too thinned skinned for some here, it's a simple problem to solve. Let's just be nice and respectful and we'll all be great pals.

No more rants from me ...

I posted the RAAF and RZNF research links in case you had a name from your fathers log book or diary etc. Not for JDK's amusement

Good luck

Thanks again everyone, I'm very serious about filling the holes in dad's Navy career. I greatly appreciate all the advice. I'm in the right place here on WIX. Looks like I'm going to have to break into my sister's home in North Carolina and steal dad's stuff ... haha, actually I may not be kidding. Anyone live in NC and want to make some money? Who knows, maybe I can have you help out. I can't believe she has zero interest in dad's Navy history. Oh well, I'll keep trying.

And James, If I were as serious as I come across on this kooky website, I would have been six feet under a long time ago. I guess ALL ex-hockey players, current warbird pilots and Auzzie I don't have that much time to type in all of your titles ... that's a joke! have an ego the size of Australia.

BTW, I'm annoyed all day, everyday, I live in Southern California, I'm supposed to be that way.

I'd like to hear from anyone out there who has stories about mock dogfights with allied airmen. I find it interest.
