By squadron codes, I believe he is referring to the numbers on the side, like the 60 on the near Mustang. Can't quite make it out on the flipped one and the others are too small...

The a/c on its back looks like 115. Can't make out any other a/c numbers.

Mike

Mike,
Here are the areas of High-Res interest to me...

Image
That P-51 on the right side of the photo is nearly in the position of another picture I think I have somewhere.

What does that look like to you guys? An engine wound up too fast on the ground?

Also of interest to me is the upside-down aircraft's tail marking. Some of the 45th FS pictures seem to have that marking on the aircraft, while others (in pictures both at the beginning of the Iwo deployment and the end of the war) have the green diagonal with black edges. I'm pretty sure I have pictures of the same aircraft with different tail markings.

The inverted a/c is from the 78th FS.

I thought so, but couldn't be sure. Here's a 45th FS lineup with different tail markings... I also think that at one point the wingtips were painted (color?).

Image
Note the one aircraft (Stinger VII a/c 67 463483) with the solid area on the tail.

Image
Here (and in other photos) Stinger VII (same serial number) has the normal tail marking.

Saki Colt with the normal markings

Saki Colt without tail markings.

Some pictures also seem to have a "solid" nose color as opposed to the green with black middle stripe markings.

If by "guys using it to enhance their recreation" you are referring to the men seen in the photograph who, upon witnessing said B-29 roll and crash after loosing two engines and swam out to the crash site to aid the crew, then no..my "ire" does not extend to them! Exactly what do you think is taking place in this photograph?? You might take note of all the people that seem to be gathered around the nose section for some reason, and the people standing on the wings seem to be looking in that general direction as well. Do you think they are having a back flip competition? Or could it be that 3 guys are trapped in the cockpit??? Their names were 1/Lt Robert Engle, 2/Lt Glenn Pavey and an unidentified Sailor who was onboard during the flight. Does someone need to post a photo of their bodies being removed in order for you to finally understand that what you THINK is happening in the photo, isn't actually the case? I assure you what all those guys were doing there was anything BUT "recreational" in nature.

I'm not faulting ANYONE here for their joking comments, as obviously no one knew what was taking place when the photo was taken (especially the person who posted the photo, apparently!) But perhaps in the future before someone posts a "funny" looking photo, they can actually take the time to learn the circumstances of the event first, so as to avoid looking like a fool later....Thanks!

Sorry folks, definitely wouldn't have posted had I known that.

I don't think you have to feel too bad or be made to feel bad.
There's nothing on the photo that even gives the slightest impression that something bad happened or in the caption. Having it thrown in your face isn't cool either.

I agree. Sorry that the jokes started. It seems anymore that WIX has become the funny pages. Sometimes you ask a serious question only to get smart a$$ remarks. I know I am guilty of jokes too. But sometimes it can go to far.

What makes this photo different then say a current aircraft crash photo with fatalities? Stop the joking and lets take this photo for what it is.

The difference is knowing and not knowing. Can it be any more obvious?
Nathan who has made a joke since we became aware of the background of the photo

I didn't make any jokes Jack. I understand no one knew of the fatalities that is fine. I am just saying let it go.

Again...sorry to hear of the loss of the crew. Brave men.

I have to admit, without being told that this was the photo of a rescue effort, I would have & did at first look think that this was a recreational swim call using the unfortunate aircraft as a swim platform. I was a lot more concerned about the outcome of those involved in that P-51 pile-up. Just my two cents. It's a da-n shame those 3 guys up front didn't make it.
