This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

I just posted a query about this on
PBY@yahoogroups.com. Roy Carthen, a PBY and PBM veteran ferried PBY's from San Diego to Norfolk and Lake Worth was a stopover point. He landed there several times and said that he even has the BuNo's of the aircraft involved. I don't know if he was in that particular group though, given the time indicated by the aircraft markings.
Floats up!

That Lake Worth also has either a B-29 or a B-36 in it as well. I can't remember the exact story, as I heard it when I was a kid, but there is a large bomber still sitting on the bottom of the Lake from when it ran off of the runway at Carswell AFB.

warbird1,
B-36B 44-92079 ended up in the lake after a prop reversing problem. Go here:
http://www.air-and-space.com/b-36%20wrecks.htm#44-92079 for a little info on the accident. Another longer article is here:

I seem to recall a Star Telegram article in the late nineties about divers searching for the airplane remains. Most of the aircraft had been removed during the accident investigation from what I remember.

Thanks Scott. I could have sworn that some kind of bomber was still down there. I was told by a family friend, who was an old F-4 driver stationed with the 301st there at Carswell, that there was something still down there. I heard this back in the early 80's, and I thought that two aircraft went off the Carswell runway into Lake Worth. One had been pretty much salvaged, probably the B-36 of which you speak. That leaves another one still there - so I thought, but I could be wrong. I heard this over 25 years ago, so I can't remember the exact details.
He11, now that I think about it, I'm not even sure it was a B-29. Maybe it was a B-24?

These photos are part of the Lock-Mart collection in the care of the University of North Texas. Be sure to check out the B-24, B-32, B-36, B-58, YB-60, YC-131 and F-111 pics too! Thanks to Rich Dann for tuning me on this collection:

Adding to that, a further search of the University's collection found these pre-WW2 images from Randolph Field:

The Fokker is a nice find - heck, all of it is!
As for the plane in the lake topic, there was an F7U-3 that went swimming but I believe that was salvaged not long after the swim.
Enjoy the Day! Mark

Lone Star's TB-58 used to be the Carswell Gate Guard. It's a bit crooked now after being slammed against a steel beam in Sept.
