This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Yes, it's East of SA about thirty miles just East of Sequin in a little town named Kingsbury.

Kingsbury is a town?

I just gotta ask, is Ray's (Mexican Restaurant) still there? It's been 25 years so I'm guessing not, but he had the best TexMex in "town"

I don't know about "Ray's" mexican food place, but here's what Bill Walsh, the business manager for Kingsbury's Aerodrome sent as a reply:

"We don't keep regular hours at Pioneer Flight Museum. We have work days every two weeks during which we have a lot of our volunteers available to give tours. The last one was this past Saturday and we won't have another until the new year because of the holidays.

Our president, Roger Freeman, lives at Old Kingsbury Aerodrome and usually welcomes anyone that will call in advance and request a visit. Information about days and hours, location, phone numbers, etc., can be found on the Pioneer Flight Museum website.

I go there more often than just our volunteer work days and would be glad to show people around, but I can do that only when Roger is present. Call me or give anyone my number, 512 626 6448, if you need further information."

So, there's the poop on Kingsbury!

On to the battleship Texas...

A couple of years ago, my friend Ray Harper (another long-time CAFer) and I flew the U-11 to La Porte to RON for the early morning show-up so we could take the "hard hat tour" of the Texas. This is really reasonable, price-wise, and takes you into the non-public bowels of the ship. You really get a feel for what it was like to serve aboard her, and you get to see restoration work being done that the public doesn't normally get to see. I believe information on this is on their website. The hard hat tour only happens a few times a year, maybe only two, but it's fantastic!

You'll be right down the road from Luling if you go to Kingsbury, matter of fact you'll pass right through the middle of town to pickup the turnoff to San Marcos.

Why should you care, you ask ? Because right on the corner is the Luling City Market, possibly one of the best BBQ places in Texas. The sauce is homeade, the brisket melts in your mouth, the ribs are out of this world ! Don't ask for a fork though, you buy by the pound and it's served on butcher paper and they'll give you a plastic fork.

I hear that Bob Collings was once sighted in there eating meat with his fingers !! So it can be a warbird hangout, ...on the right day !

Had a great and fruitful trip to Texas thanks to the WIX guys help.

We got the P-39 out on the ramp in San Marcos and moved it around a couple of times to get some very nice angles and while we were there we did some shots of the Cessna 310 in military markings as well. A couple of good pictures for the next book. My two boys had the great privilege of being allowed to sit in the P-39. They were both thrilled.

Mike, Thank you very much for your and your crews help. Can you remind me of the gentleman's name who showed me around the museum and library (and bought one of my books)? I would like to get his contact information so that I can get a hold of him in relation to an item you have in the museum there. I have some questions about it that might improve my education further.

We also went to the Kingsbury Airdrome and Roger Freeman gave us the grand tour. His Canadian built 1918 Curtiss Jenny is very different from the US built JN-4H Hisso Jenny that I fly, and it was nice to learn more about the Canucks.

We had a great tour, and I would like to thank all involved for their help. Let me know when you guys might be out here so I can repay the favor.

It was wonderful meeting you Eric! I'm glad you enjoyed visiting the neighbors (Kingsbury) as well.

Clint Epley, our outgoing XO and immediate past Wing Leader is the "gentleman" you are asking about. I put gentleman in quotes as he's a retired NAVY pilot! Just kidding, he's a nice guy. Retired as a Commander, and was flying the EP-3E Aries.

I'll PM you with contact info.

Thanks again Mike, I got the PM.
