I'm not saying there was only one set of vintage Chino shows. I didn't get there in time for the shows you describe, but got to one or two in the late 80s that were very memorable. I know you know that the venue has had its ups and downs for shows. The 90s were a dry spell pretty much. The 2000s' shows gave Thunder a run for its money as the best in the country for prop fighters, though not so strong on bombers or jets. Not sure they will be able to continue doing that now.

Here's hoping they become more accessible again. I take 51fixer's point that "some may" participate in future Chino shows, but that's a lot different from "all will" participate as has been the case in recent years. I suspect that the last several Chino shows in May will come to be recalled as vintage years, not to be equalled for a while at that venue. Meanwhile it is looking like there could be a true blockbuster in Texas if Friedkin, Lewis, CAF, Cavanaugh, and Lone Star all made a real max effort some year.

August

Even with what was there at Chino one really can't say that ALL of the Friedkin Family of warbirds were participating at any one show. As big as it has been in the past it has grown and will probably continue to grow if trends continue.
What they have as a collection of both personal and warbird aircraft are their property. As with many personal collections they won't be constantly on public display.
As with many things we should enjoy the opportunity to view and watch these aircraft fly understanding that their will always be change. What has been the past and the present won't always be the future whether we agree or like it.
As Steve Hinton told a bunch of us one day as we complained about a paint job- "Go buy your own and do with as you like".
As much as we have desires for these aircraft the biggest thing is to enjoy them while they are here.

GGIII is one of the two P-51s I listed on the other site as attending. Quite a line up, go to the upcoming events blog for the others.

In my opinion, the vintage shows all occurred in the 1980s. A-4, T-38, F-86, a handful of T-33s and the best field of unlimited air racers short of Reno. All that in addition to the piston warbirds we know and love.

Those were great shows and along with the original Chino shows of the late 70s were quite a sight. Everything from a B-29 to the P-26 was covered over that airport between those shows.
Many great memories.
Today's environment will make for different shows. There is still much to enjoy there.

Thanks Rich for informing me that other people's airplanes are not mine and that we should enjoy warbirds. Neither of those things had ever occurred to me, and I have never seen them expressed on this forum before.

I was just offering a prognosis for the airshows at Chino, not criticizing the Friedkins.

August,
I didn't mean this as a lecture to you nor did I take it as a criticism of the Friedkin Family.
I started working on warbirds as a 16 yo kid hanging around at the museum in Chino.
Over the years the biggest constant I have found is things change.
That was 1976, today I'm assembling a Mk 18 Spit here in PA. I'm saying enjoy what passions you have as you make the journey. If you can, involve yourself as a participant in those passions. We all will be the better for it and the good shows will mean more and the lean years will be better to take.
Maybe this year Brandon's T-6 will be on show and that will be an accomplishment that we all would support.
WIX work party at Brandon's hangar!

Brandon,
Wish I wasn't 3000 miles away, I'd love to be there.
Thanks for the invite.

Just for gosh sake, please don't tell that Cook guy about GGIII attending.

You never know what he may do. :)
