I cannot say for absolute certain that it will not be flown more than once, BUT, the stated policy @ the FHC from everyone involved is exactly the same as stated for the DORA and the Ki-43, far too valuable to risk in a rotating flying display setting, so it will fly once and then be parked. The reason for the rebuilding/ modernization of the JUMO 004's is the absolute distrust of 63 year old engines that were marginal when fresh out of the box, let alone after sitting around in less than ideal undocumented situations for that long.
Besides, think of the crowds a one time historic flight that will draw people from the entire planet to medium sized Moses Lake, WA. when it does fly- perhaps 262crew has some further inputs as he helps build the STORMBIRDS replica 262's-
O.K., thanks for the info. I still don't understand why bothering to go to all of that unless you plan on flying it more than once. Other than being able to claim it's the only "airworthy" or "last airworthy" authentic 262 or if it's just simply an ego trip, it does not make sense to make just one flight and then park it forever, in light of the modifications required for that. Either restore it staticly and keep it's originality and authenticity or fly it sparingly and with care for only special occasions. Restoring for one flight seems a little odd, especially since the aircraft does not need to be moved or ferried from a location. I do hope that they announce when that will be and not keep it a secret. If I have advance warning, I will go out there. So is Moses Lake an alternate storage or restoration area for Allen's collection? I've only heard it once in reference to any connection with Allen, and that was where I heard the B-17 was in storage, lying in pieces, at Moses Lake. So, if I understand you correctly, I assume the 262's final assembly will take place at Moses Lake? So, what exactly is the tie between Allen and Moses Lake?
Sorry for all the questions, but I appreciate the info, as intelligence on Allen's collection is extremely hard for us outside of Seattle to get!
Yes, I know, it's not my airplane, the owner can do whatever he wants, blah, blah, blah. I'm not complaining, mind you, only trying to understand the rationale for such a decision.
