The planes still in Lake Michigan are now totally covered with zebra mussels. How would those be removed if/when more planes are recovered? Pressure washing?

Guys, can we not assume the worst? I'm not any happier than others with the way things appear to be going, but lets not make ourselves look worse.
Personally, I'm for at least initial attempts at friendly persuasion. Let's show them that we're NOT what they paint us to be. Make friends with local media, share your views with your neighbors and get them interested. Be good ambassadors for whatever righteous causes we support.
Lets deal with the issues one at a time, as they come up, deal with things in as civilized a manner as possible, and fight to win, and preserve our freedoms!

Im sorry Ryan. :( I guess I was just venting some. I really can't see why some people wanna rid the world of warbirds. I think there are more important issues in this world then trying to destroy history. Its a darn good hobby!

Yep, he told me it was on the top of his "to do" list. Seeing as everything else is running so smoothly.

What exactly has George or any other C. in C. done to help the Warbird community out?

Sadly, there are no TBDs awaiting discovery in the fresh waters of the Great Lakes.

I have heard about the "birdcage" Corsair before, though. In fact, several years ago I visited Pensacola and the docent spoke hopefully about adding an F4U-1 to the collection some day.

I'm sure we will be among the first to know if these rumblings become reality.

According to some sources there may be close to 400 aircraft  in Lake Michigan including at least one "birdcage" Corsair and some other rare types like SNJ-2s, a SB2U and a few straight wing F4Fs that have not been recovered yet.

Ryan

I have heard that in some areas where there was industrial effluent on the bottom it was not uncommon to find say landing gear sticking out of the bottom with everything else corroded into the muck. Still that would probably leave say 200 aircraft to be recovered. WOW

Recently there was a news story here about the spread of the zebra mussels. They now cover everything on the lake bottom off the Illinois shore in Lake Michigan.
